Old computers for Sierra games.

Post by Hedegaard »

What computers do you use to play your Sierra games on?

I use an AMD 80386 SX 16Mhz with 360K floppy drive.

I wish I had an Intel 80286 system..........maybe in the future......

Core 2 Duo with DOSBox. DOSBox has made the need for a dinosaur irrelevant. DOSBox is the only way to fly.

Indeed. DOSBox is awesome! If you're not aware, go to:

http://www.dosbox.com

Even the developer of DOSBox is on the forums here!

And most of us are well versed in DOSBox if you had any questions.

Says you. But nothing beats an authentic piece of OPL3 or OPL2 hardware like the AWE32! Adlib emulation just doesn't cut it when you've experienced the real thing.

This is what I have for my authentic old game experiences:

486 DX2/66Mhz 12MB RAM
500MB HDD and a 6.4GB HDD
32x Creative CD-ROM
Sound Blaster AWE32 CT3900
Music Quest MIDI Card
Windows 95 (hacked to start in DOS 7 mode)

Unfortunately, the computer case is too small to house a 5.25" floppy drive :(. It was either that or the 6.4GB hard drive. And I needed the extra space. As of right now it's loaded with tons of great DOS and Windows games.

I also have a 286 mobo and a Pentium 2 mobo but not cases for them. I'd like to build them someday. Especially the Pentium 2 for those old 3D Win95/98 games. Just need a good Voodoo card. I only have a Voodoo 1. I foolishly sold away my Voodoo 3 :(. And it turned out the guy didn't even need it!

My Dino, a Win 98 oldie. I'll look up the brand name in a minute. I prefer that occasionally over playing through DOSBox just to look at old Windows versions etc.

And I use the Vista and my Samsung 7 laptop.

Feel free to send some samples of what sounds wrong with our opl emulation.
Good sound reproduction is very important for me.

However, be sure to test the OPL emulation using a sample rate of 49716.

Thanks, QBix. I'll try that setting and make some recordings soon as I get my 486 set up in our new place.

I made a new thread showing the results of my comparisons between DOSBox and the AWE32.

Sorry to hear about that :(

Although DOSBox is probably ok to relive those old games, nothing beats sitting down with a "dinosaur", hearing it whirrrrr up, smelling the old piston engine, well the other engines in an old PC anyway, waiting forevvvvvvver for the BIOS to check the memory.

Nothing beats those nostalgic feelings :)

I am sure a script (even a .BAT file) could be written to replicate the BIOS memory check.

DOSBox has worked wonders for retro gaming, but I still sometimes wish my old P2/366 laptop with Win98 on it still worked. DOSBox doesn't do much for games released in that 1996-2000 range that have DirectX issues on newer machines. I had a lot of trouble with my old copies of Grim Fandango and Longest Journey the last time I tried to play them. QFG5 also sounds like it's a royal pain to get working on modern machines, although I haven't tried yet.
