An interesting find on the KQ Omni...

Is the game being a ROYAL pain? Need a hint? Got a problem? This is the place to discuss King's Quest!

An interesting find on the KQ Omni...

Post by Akril »

I don't know how widespread the knowledge of this thing is, but it's completely new to me:

"The King's Appeal"

Man...those illustrations look like they're from a cartoon from the 1970s! And apparently the artist felt that the proportions of Graham(e)'s AGI sprite didn't need to be changed at all ("Hmm...a head that takes up 1/4th of the entire body? Okay, I can that. No problem.")

I didn't know about it. While the graphic style is certainly odd, I find it genuinely amusing. It makes me warm and fuzzy ;)

That is taken from the original PC Jr KQ manual.

I have been meaning to scan my manual to make a PDF of it, but that is pretty low on a long list.

The first thing that comes to mind are the old Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons. Excellent find indeed.

I still think that version of KQ has some of the most misleading cover art I've ever seen. :P

Geeze, not only does it graphically depict a fully-armored Graham wielding shield and sword, it even goes so far as to entice the would-be consumer with: "put on your armor...as you search the countryside..."

Oftentimes when I read the plot summaries on the backs of DVD cases, I wonder to myself, "Did the people who wrote this ever actually sit down and watch the movie?" That cover art evokes similar lines of thought...

I would credit IBM more for it than Sierra. It was IBM's packaging and documentation. Here is the first cover released by Sierra. Much more representative of the game.

That's an impressive prop. I wonder where they found all this stuff to shoot.

They were gamers, most of that's probably owned by staff. Other stuff is probably just rental costume stuff.

They do actually look like those cartoons. The style reminded me of something in particular, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

And to repeat what others have already said, that PC Jr cover art is pretty misleading -- although it does have the Magic Chest sitting there, as well as a castle (even though it looks a lot more like Neuschwanstein than the castle in any of the KQ games). And I've never noticed it before, but man, that armor makes that knight look like he has some pretty big thighs...
