I agree: MOE and KQ8 are the same games. Just because it doesn't FEEL like a KQ game doesn't make it any less of one as far as the series is concerned. That doesn't mean you have to LIKE the game, of course. ;)

It never was until they slapped it on the European release.

I see it this way: if The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery can be considered GK2 (even though the number two isn't written anywhere on the box), then Mask of Eternity is, for all intents and purposes, KQ8. :P

Perhaps only the German release. Don't know if any others. This may not show because of Moby's image linking blocking, but you can go to Moby and paste it in the address bar.

Yes, but BEAST WITHIN at least remained with the characters of the previous game... and it was still good... and actually made a lot of sense... and... Well I could go on! :D

And it was still very much in keeping with the character of the series. It still had Gabriel Knight as the protagonist. And it was still created by Jane Jensen. Roberta Williams eventually lost control of MoE. If the search function still work on Sierra Gamers I could find a post of Ken Williams' that describes the production of MoE. The game was in production when Ken left, leaving Roberta with an ever diminishing role in its design. It ended up as a very different game than what Roberta had originally envisioned as other designers stepped in and wrested the direction of the game from her.

That said, I still found it an enjoyable enough game, just not a game worthy of being the next chapter in the series. I'll even concede King's Quest as part of the title, just not King's Quest VIII.

Ah... the Germans (and Austrians). Yes, they do have this tendency to change the box art (Gabriel Knight 3, holy mother, how did they ever come up with THAT one?! Nice boob job on Grace though, lol).

Nope, no others, just the German releases. They apparently enjoy giving collectors a hard time...

I don't think we understand each other.

My issue isn't about the content. Whether or not anyone here enjoyed it is another matter and entirely irrelevant to my argument. It's simply about the FACT (yes, fact) that MOE is the eighth King's Quest game. By that very nature it is KQ8.

If we can subjectively say which game is what, then it stands to reason that because I didn't like KQ7's art style (something that differed greatly from the other titles in the series), it's no longer the seventh game in the series. That's obviously not true. Just because I didn't care for KQ7 doesn't make it any less a KQ title.

Police Quest: Open Season is the fourth PQ game and can be rightfully called PQ4. I didn't like that game, it had different characters in a different setting and looked much different that previous PQ games. However, my dislike of the game doesn't change the fact it's still PQ4.

The bottom line is my opinion doesn't matter and neither does anyone else's when it comes to believing what is and what isn't a game in any series. Since MOE was released as the eighth game in the KQ series, it is KQ8. End of story.
