For instance... in SQ3, right at the beginning, you can type "touch metal." Your hand then gets sliced off and you die from blood loss. That's just stupid. I can see dying from a number of things (not the least of which was Arnoid in that game), but merely touching some metal?
Agreed. Personally, my favorite (or least favorite, as the case may be) stupid Sierra death is in LB1 when merely walking up to the handrail on the balcony causes the floor to collapse. Laura tumbles to her death. Very stupid.
Hmm... hey Rav, does touching your HackMaster +12 count as "touching metal"? *grin*

Anyway, back on topic... dying from ridiculous things. This reminds me of the D&D module, the Tomb of Horrendous Doom or somesuch... step through the door, find some statue with an open mouth, touch the mouth... and you DIE!

That always struck me as profoundly unfair.

Unfortunately, I think it's really hard to find that "happy medium" between dying left and right (Sierra) and never dying (LucasArts). I know a few Adventure games have done it, but most haven't.

Interestingly enough, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was one of the few LucasArts games where you could die quite a bit. However, the game warned you by playing menacing music. Plus, it was easy to tell when your life was in danger, such as a Nazi holding a gun at your back. In a situation like, you probably shouldn't piss him off. :P
