X-Men: First Class (Movie)
This is fail.
I am, thus far, not impressed.
In just one year's time, 20-year-old actress Jennifer Lawrence has gone from virtual unknown to one of the most respected young stars in Hollywood. For her Golden Globe-nominated role in "Winter's Bone," she transformed herself into a tough-talking, wood-chopping, squirrel-skinning Ozark teen searching for her missing father. But that's nothing compared to the change she underwent to become Mystique, the blue-skinned shape-shifting mutant in this summer's "X-Men: First Class."
20th Century Fox just released the first photo of the cast of the "X-Men" prequel, and it shows Lawrence and costars as the younger versions of the Marvel Comics superheroes from the original movie trilogy. Lawrence plays Raven Darkholme -- better known as Mystique -- the character played by Rebecca Romijn in the earlier films. And in a conversation with Lawrence, the actress told me that becoming the scaly, blue mutant was an arduous and time-consuming process.
Lawrence said that it took eight hours to apply the full-body makeup to turn her into Mystique. For days when she was wearing her X-Men costume as shown in the photo, it took half as long to cover her face, neck and chest. Then, after a full day of filming, Lawrence said it took another three and a half hours to remove the makeup.
I asked her what she did to pass the time during the eight hours while her makeup was being applied. She said, "We watch movies and talk... It's kind of like a bizarre sleepover." She said over the course of six months of shooting, she became very close with the seven makeup artists and hair stylists who created her look. It was a difficult process for everyone involved, but Lawrence said, "if [someone] were just sitting outside the trailer they'd hear the 'Sex and the City' theme song and giggling and laughing."
Lawrence said that she hadn't seen the first three "X-Men" movies when she first auditioned for the role, and her unfamiliarity with the role of Mystique nearly cost her the part. She told me she auditioned a few times before finally sitting down to watch the original trilogy. Once she did, she said, "I realized I was doing it completely wrong, and I was like, 'Why have they been calling me back?'" Seeing the first three films, she saw that Rebecca Romijn played the role "kind of cold and cool and snakelike... I was doing my Raven kind of sweet and teenybopper, because I didn't know what else to do."
"X-Men: First Class" takes place in the 1960s, when Professor X (played here by James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) were still friends and not yet bitter adversaries. Lawrence described the movie as an origin story more than a prequel, and that Mystique is not the villainess that she is in the previous movies. The photo shows that even the costumes are a bit of a throwback; they retain the yellow and blue color scheme of the X-Men uniforms from the original comic books.
One character who still hasn't been revealed is the film's main bad guy, Sebastian Shaw, played by Kevin Bacon. Lawrence told me she has filmed a few scenes with Bacon, "and that is my favorite thing about coming to work."
Lawrence has several films coming out this year. Besides "X-Men," she also appears in "The Beaver" opposite Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. But in the meantime she's still being honored for her work in "Winter's Bone." This past weekend, she attended both the Critics Choice and the Golden Globe Awards, and experts are predicting she's a lock for an Oscar nomination. While it might seem odd to go from an acclaimed independent movie to a blockbuster based on a comic book, it's really not. Two of this year's Golden Globe nominees for Best Actress in drama and comedy will both soon be seen in Marvel Comics movies: Natalie Portman in "Thor," and Emma Stone in the new "Spider-Man." And another former X-Woman, Halle Berry, was nominated as well.
Lawrence told me that between her movie work and the multiple award shows she has had to attend, her schedule is packed to the gills. She said, "I don't think I've ever been this busy in my life, but it's nothing you can complain about. I'm really grateful for everything, but at the same time it's exhausting."
"X-Men: First Class" is scheduled to open on June 3. See the cast in the photo below.
From left to right: Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. Magneto; Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert; January Jones as Emma Frost; Jason Flemyng as Azazel; Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast; Lucas Till as Alex Summers/Havok; Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvador; Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique; and James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Movie)
Oh god, the picture looks terrible. Every X-Men movie after X2 has been awful. Still, I like most of this casting. I still think Micheal Fassbender and James McAvoy are inspired choices. Jennifer Lawrence was incredible in Winter's Bone, there's no denying that.
I suppose one must live in hope of a good x-men movie ever seeing the light of day again. =P Another chance at a good x-men related movie could be Aronofsky's Wolverine movie. I'm still surprised that he signed on for it.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Movie)
I've gotta ask: who goes into an audition without any knowledge of the character you're auditioning to be? Playing Mystique as a "teenybopper?" What the hell?
As for the rest of the cast (I looked them up on Wikipedia), the only actors I recognize are Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and Ray Wise. The rest of them? Nope.
I do have to say that Michael Fassbender looks like a young Michael Douglas in that promotional photo up above.
I thought Emma Frost was that youngish-looking girl in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I remember Wolverine breaking quite a few kids out of a facility later on in the movie and one of kids looked like a young Emma Frost. She who could also turn her body into diamond (just as Frost can).
If XM:FC takes place in the 1960s, then it has to be before or at least around the same time as one of the earliest parts of XMO:W, when Wolverine was in the Vietnam War. So how the hell does Frost go from being a grown woman to child years later?
Of course... this is the X-Men we're talking about. That comic book series has more plot holes in it than I can count. Hell, somehow Magneto is still a concentration camp survivor in 2011, but remains as active as a 30 year-old.
Finally... why? Why do they have to make a new X-Men movie? Just leave it alone before you completely run it into the ground.

This article (http://comicbookmovie.com/fansites/Nota ... s/?a=28386) made me feel better about the movie, especially at Vaughn's reaction to the (terrible) picture leak.

His reaction only makes me more skeptical. Every time someone from Fox has to apologize for a leaked picture, it never bodes well for the movie.

The easy way to find out if this movie sucks or not (after it's released) is to check the Houston Chronicle. If the Houston Chronicle gives XM:FC a good review, then you know it's a bad movie.

Hell, the best way to know if its bad or good, is to actually watch the whole thing =P
Heck, I was delighted with the casting of Fassbender, who is a far bigger name this side of the pond, he has the talent and actually can speak German if they're showing Magneto's background in the movie.

Re: X-Men: First Class (Movie)
So ...
#1: Playing Magneto. One of the characters I am very picky about. Magneto is such a fantastic character (when he's written correctly) - that though he's considered "evil" - because of the things he endured during the Nazi Concentration Camps - sometimes his views become kind of gray and you can almost sometimes see his point of view. It takes someone with some serious acting chops to pull off this kind of character.
- Moira MacTaggert, Beast ... I am meh on. Moira is human so she won't be hard to pull off. Disappointed that they're going with the blue Beast rather than the original Beast. But whatever.
- January Jones as Emma Frost. Never knew who she was until I saw her on the Golden Globes last week, when the wife was wearing it and she had that stunning red dress on. (Stunning for all the males who admired her body). Having seen that, I know she has the looks that fit Emma Frost... and depending which version of Emma Frost they're writing (her evil version or her smutty slut version currently going on)... we shall see if she can pull it off.
- Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvador - really? They're putting Angel Salvador into the movie? She's completely obscure and not very popular at all as a character... so their choice makes me wonder.
- Teen Bob Mystique - Not surprising... if they have Charles Xavier and Magneto at a young age... considering the popularity Mystique gained through the X-Men movies, it's no surprise to see her here in this version. We shall see how she does.
- Alex Summers - Imagine my surprise when they opted to put Havok in there over his overrated popular brother, Cyclops. This is the one big plus for me - because I want to see how they do one of my favorite all time mutants.
That said - Jason Flemyng as Azazel.
WTFRAK?
Seriously? Azazel? What the *&^% is Disney/Marvel thinking?!? Seriously!!
Azazel is - through one of the most horribly written and most disliked stories in X-Men history (and not JUST by me!) - the father of Nightcrawler. Azazel is an evil character... so I am trying to figure out why they would have him in the series. If he's a part of the X-Men, that's unacceptable. If he's the - or one of the - main villains the X-Men fight - it's going to be stupid. If they're leading up to Nightcrawler for the second movie - this is the worse way to do it, considering how hated the story was in the comics. THIS - this alone - is what I think will make this movie sink. Over everything else - even if everyone else does an awesome job - this is going to be the damnation of the movie. If you're curious to read about (one of) the crappiest stories ever told in X-Men History: http://x-men.wikia.com/wiki/Azazel
And I seriously doubt he's a fan of the X-Men as he claims. I'd love to quiz that bastard and see.

I seriously doubt this movie will have any ties to the previous X-Men and/or Wolverine movies... I believe it's intended to stand on it's own as a new movie, with no previous ties and connections. (Because that's what hack writers do). Because if it does tie in with the previous X-Men/Wolverine movies, then it's severely out of whack as Cyclops is Havok's older brother, only by a few years. But if Havok is in XM:FC and they tie it to the other X-Men movies, that'd put him at Magneto/Xavier's age, which means he's been around since WWII.DeadPoolX wrote: I thought Emma Frost was that youngish-looking girl in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Re: X-Men: First Class (Movie)
I've always liked Magneto. Like you said, he's sometimes depicted as a "bad guy" and while his methods can get borderline extreme, his reasons behind it make sense. That takes a good writer and unfortunately, that's something Hollywood sorely lacks.Tawmis wrote:#1: Playing Magneto. One of the characters I am very picky about. Re: X-Men: First Class (Movie)
The trailer told us pretty much nothing at all about the premise of the movie, other than the people in it are so cool that they get a rocking soundtrack. It's like they're trying to make all the superheroes super trendy. Geez. The "cool kids" got a hold of them. They really are ruined.
