Sierra Game Demos

Post by Collector »

I Finally have all of the demos linked on the Sierra Demos page. I have yet to add links on all of the individual game pages. Enjoy. I have also added links on the SHP front page to other features that have been buried on the site.

Some awesome work, Collector. There's stuff there like the GK1 Demo that I never knew about.

Have you ever played Goldrush the game? It's most excellent!

Something to remember about Gold Rush! is that it uses the old AGI engine, which means the graphics are pretty bad and the action continues to move while you type. It's the last part that tends to frustrate me now. Back in 1988, when it was released, that didn't seem so bad (every Sierra game of that type acted the same), but today, it's annoying.

DPX just has a low tolerance, I think. :D It's a given that the graphics aren't going to be the best (considering when it was made - and since he's seen the demo) - and yes, it's a typey game, and yes things keep moving while you type - but I am not sure why that would be a problem (having played Gold Rush! several times)...

I can only think of one time when an enviroment thing you're trying to grab is moving and you need to type... but you just type it once... and then if I remember F3 repeats the command you just typed in the game... so it's not like you need to retype if you miss the said object once.

I like the more "recent" text parser games, which paused the game while you typed. In the older games, where movement continued as you type, you sometimes had to know what was coming next in order to type fast enough.

That's poor game design. You shouldn't have to know something you couldn't if it's your first time playing. After having played the game once or twice, you're ready, but a first timer? Probably not.

See, I didn't see a problem with it for the most part - because rarely was it a life and death situation. Now I agree, say for example Space Quest III - with the conveyer belt (near the beginning) - if it didn't pause the game, that would have sucked. Because you'd have to type "Stand" then "Jump" before landing in the grinder, which might be difficult for someone who isn't fast on the keyboard. But for the most part, there was rarely a situation (that I can remember - but I am an old man) - where you'd need to be quick on the keyboard to get what you needed (as in a life/death situation).

I just remembered the correct name. It's typing of the dead. Type or die does sound a lot better though. It's basically The house of the dead 2 but instead you have to type instead of shoot making it a lot harder.
