The DOSBox Thread
The DOSBox Thread
DOSBox is the classic gamer's best friend. It is the very first tool that you should try for that old DOS game that you can't get going. While DOSBox is extremely easy to use, many are intimidated by it at first. Most are baffled by mounting a drive. If you need help, ask away here.

Re: The DOSBox Thread
I <3 DOSBox. I really do. Not just for my Sierra games - but a lot of other DOS games I have (namely the Realms of Arkania and Wizardry series).

What is it they say? DOSBox is a girls best friend!
I too was at first baffled by it, but now I can't live without it.

Agree. It's definitely the program I run the most on my PC!

On a side note, Qbix, one of the main two DOSBox authors has complimented me on this site.

Heh - they probably get a lot of traffic off the Sierra Help Pages (before when it was on my site, and will eventually through here once all the search engines adjust to the move).Collector wrote:On a side note, Qbix, one of the main two DOSBox authors has complimented me on this site.

DOSBox is a godsend. Slows down the games to run right, and allows me to run them on my Macbook without having to resort to VMware to do it.

Re: The DOSBox Thread
I have to admit, DOSBox is very useful when playing older DOS games. If you don't want to edit any DOSBox parameters, then using it is easy -- simply drag the BAT, COM or EXE onto the desktop icon. It'll play from there, no typing required.
As much as I like DOSBox, however, I prefer ScummVM. It's too bad it doesn't work with most Sierra games.

It works for all of the AGI games. There is also some movement on merging FreeSCI with ScummVM, but don't look for much anytime soon.

Re: The DOSBox Thread
The mounting and other differences from real ms dos threw me off at first. It really does work great for dos games. I have just one question though. Is it possiable to switch real disks or do they have to be isos for DOSBox. Before I try anything with lighthouse I would really like to know.
Re: The DOSBox Thread
If you are talking about changing real floppies or CDs, you can always make DOSBox reread the directories on the fly after changing disks by pressing Ctrl+F4.

Re: The DOSBox Thread
I did not want to try anything with Light house because I'm not too crazy for iso images and I had the impression changing disks was just for iso and floppy disk images. Thanks for giving me the info that it also works for real cd's.
Re: The DOSBox Thread
For Lighthouse my installer will create the ISOs and automatically set the game up in DOSBox for you.

Well, yes... I know it works with AGI games; however, I dislike playing those nowadays. I'm sorry to say that the graphics are so pitiful that it's almost painful to view.Collector wrote:It works for all of the AGI games. I hate sounding that superficial, but even VGA stretches it a bit for me. Old AGI games in EGA just don't cut it anymore.
