Guinness: Kinect sets record as fastest-selling consumer ele

Post by Tawmis »

Microsoft's Kinect camera system is all about movement, but no one could have imagined it would move this quickly.

The company today revealed some startling sales info for the motion-control device. According to Microsoft, since launching in November of 2010 they've sold over 10 million Kinect sensors worldwide. Even more impressive is the rate at which those units were sold: in its first 60 days (between November 4, 2010 and January 3, 2011), eight million Kinects were sold, an average of 133,333 Kinects per day.

Big numbers? To Guinness World Records, they're pretty much the biggest ever. The record-tracking authority has officially stated that Kinect is now the fastest-selling consumer electronics device of all time, outpacing even Apple's iPod and iPad during their equivalent launch periods.

"The sales figures here speak for themselves," said Gaz Deaves, Gaming Editor for Guinness World Records. "According to independent research, no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, which is an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector."

Make note of that little "within a 60-day time span" caveat, because, well, it's sort of a huge caveat. Labeling something the "fastest-selling" of its kind depends greatly on the time period you're working with. Kinect might have moved sales mountains in its first two months, but that rate has clearly dropped off substantially. The 60-day sales record seems somewhat arbitrary, although no less impressive a feat.

Microsoft also announced that over 10 million standalone Kinect titles have been sold.

That's 10 million teenage girls. I think a lot of people expect more from it than what it is. It's a glorified EyeToy, and unless Microsoft releases an analog stick peripheral among other things, all you're really going to see are games where you flail your body around in a set position. You're not going to be playing any games that require travel in a game world. It's not a holodeck. The one person I know who has actually played it has said it wasn't very fun and there was a noticeable delay between the game registering movements (it was that dance game).

1. How quick are they trying to move? If you're doing insane karate type moves (or being really silly) the Kinetic will indeed lag and TRY to keep up.

2. If he's dancing normal, did he calibrate the Kinetic? He can also go in an recalib it also.
