Re: 3.5" USB Drives.

Post by Tawmis »

It's what I have done with most of my games (back when I had 3.5 and 5.25 drives) - so I had them all on CD. Of course, the main ones now have come out in multiple versions of CDs. But there's some classics that never were that I am trying to acquire (all Sierra related) that I'd need the 3.5 drive for. And I had mentioned it on the forum before the first melt down - and thought, "I can't be the only person who didn't know there was a 3.5" USB drive out there..." So I reposted it again when we got the forum back up!

Don't be saying first melt down. No more meltdowns! Besides, you have your #2 spot, now.

My computer has a 3.5" diskette drive built into it, but what I'd really like to find is a 5.25" diskette drive. I haven't seen any -- the few that are still available -- that'd be compatible with today's machines or weren't specifically designed for older Apple computers.

i have never run across an external USB 5.25". that format was pretty dead before USB became mainstream. You'd probably have to get an actual old PC with 5.25 drives in it ...

Yea - not gonna find a 5.25 USB drive. The USB 1.0 spec went live in 97 by which time 5.25 drives were long gone.

I've got a working 5.25 drive on a machine (it's a combo drive - both 3.5 and 5.25 - that one of my older machines is able to talk to). I actually also have a currently unattached 8 inch floppy drive. On the list of things to do before I die (or when I get laid off from my job) is to finally sit down and hammer out a USB to floppy interface so I can continue to use both drives with newer machines. If I ever do it I'll be sure to spread the wealth :D

I realize 5.25" came long after USB - but I am saying I am surprised no company out there has made one in recent years, for folks who have 5.25" disks. Granted, for the most part, I'd wager most 5.25" disks don't even work anymore - but still, there's people out there with a need - no matter how small - just surprised SOMEONE has not taken the bite to do it. :)

You mean 5.25" came out a long time before USB, right? ;)
