Awww, "Day of the Tentacle" dropped to #6. And my #3 pick went to #1. I can't complain too much (except for the ill-paced puzzle network in year 4.)

So is this the part where everybody posts their own top 100 lists?

Hmmm... I have had Riven for years and still haven't played it. Figured I'd try Myst first.

I can live very well with that #1 though... And I love your description of #3, you manage to point out a lot of layers I probably would've overlooked.

I did manage to write down 100 games I've played, but it's the organizing part that's throwing me off. Once I get to games with sequels, that's where my brain starts fighting over which ones should be higher on the list.

I'm certainly happy with the number 1 pick (Grim Fandango), which (and here's a little confession time) I would not even have heard about if I didn't play Monkey Island 3 and interacted with that skeleton in Blondebeard's chicken restaurant.

Guybrush: This little sordid scene has litigation written aaaaallllllllllll over it.

I played most of the top ten games and loved them: MI2, DOTT, Tex Murphy, Broken Sword, GK2 and, of course, Grim Fandango.

I would've removed Zork Nemesis from the list and put Return to Zork somewhere in it. I liked Return to Zork more than Grand Inquisitor. I remember not liking how short Grand Inquisitor was.

And done! That is definitely a worthy game to put on the list. Even though it's linear, you really do have to explore the world to find solutions, and most of them - as per adventure game tradition - require a lot of pixel-hunting. But what got me is how many different ways you can use the environment to solve puzzles. It's like the laws of physics are your inventory. I can see why this made it so high on the list.

I've wanted to play The Space Bar ever since it came out, and this list revived my interest in playing it. I finally got around to it today, but I'm sad to say I just couldn't get into it. The camera panning seemed too fast even with emulation and a slowdown utility. But I thought the interface was horrible and the game was pretty confusing. Add that to the fact that it's supposed to be extremely difficult and have unforgiving time-based puzzles, it all just made me lose interest. The constant CD switching was annoying too. I think I'll settle for a video playthrough, but I didn't like the only one I found mostly because I'm not really a fan of commentary while playing, and the game audio sounded odd in some way, which took me out of the experience.

I really don't get the whole linear vs non-linear debate. As if linear is better? It's just alternate. I've always loved linear games. Space Quest is thoroughly linear through and through. Well, SQ3 isn't really, but once the plot picks up and you figure out what you have to do it's all very linear.

I started playing fate of Atlantis just now, it seems to be a great game, but I really didn't like the part where you have to bring the poor rodent to be murdered by the snake and then they both fall into a cliff! What did the rodent (or the snake) ever do to Indy? What an unscrupulous thing to do!!!
