King's Quest CGA.

Post by Tawmis »

So I remember, when I first played KQ - it was off a 5.25" floppy that you booted to. I remember it being 4 colors, and no "text pop ups"...

So randomly, today I was looking for it...

And found this video... and this is the version I first remember playing.

Of course this CGA not the first version. The first version was the one for the PCjr. It was also the first game designed for the PCjr. IBM commissioned Sierra to create a game for their new computer to show off its advanced features, like a whopping 16 colors and 3 three voice sound.

So the 16 color version was first - and more superior - and they also made a CGA color version?

Yes, but that is one of the things that they designed into AGI; high portability. Perhaps it was an easier port to PC, but remember that there were AGI games on Apple and other platforms of the era, too. The game was a real milestone for Sierra financially. Technologically it was milestone for the industry.

The Tandy version is the closest to the PCjr. The has the same three voice plus noise sound with 16 colors. The SHP installer sets the game up as Tandy.

Yeah, I first played KQ on an Apple II with a green monochrome monitor. It was damn difficult to tell the difference between land and water, which often led to some embarrassing deaths.

And I always thought that KQ1 AGI was pretty basic. This is like The wizard and the princess!

The Wizard and the Princess was not animated nor had any audio. For its time KQ was technologically groundbreaking.
