"The Wolverine" (no spoilers here)

Post by Tawmis »

Just saw "The Wolverine" movie. Not much on story. Plenty of action. Some trivial complaints, throughout the movie (what they did with Viper and Silver Samurai), and how Wolverine was up, then down, then up, and then suddenly down again (you will know what I mean when you see it). Best part of the movie? Post Credits. STAY. PAST. THE. CREDITS. And it's a VERY short wait for the post credit scene. It's setting up the next X-MEN movie (Days of Future Past). If you go see the Wolverine movie and don't get who they mention on the television screen (the company), message me and I will tell you. Don't want to mention it here because it'd be spoilers to others who are familiar with what it means. :P

Maia and I saw The Wolverine a week ago and we weren't overly impressed. Granted, it was better than the first Wolverine movie, but that's not saying much.

Like Tawmis said, the story was very light. In fact, I was a little pissed off they did such a half-assed version of the "Wolverine in Japan" storyline. I know the original story was written in the 1980s, so it'd need some serious updating. However, using even bits and pieces of it to make... whatever The Wolverine was didn't work either.

One thing Maia and I both noticed immediately was how much older Hugh Jackman looked. Sure, it's been 13 years since he first portrayed Wolverine, but Logan (or James Howlett, if you want to get picky) ages extremely slowly. The movie should've used some special effects or makeup to cover up some of the lines on his face.

Maia and I know to stay past the credits in Marvel movies. The scene that played was definitely setting everything up for the next X-Men movie. There are some questions that need to be answered, such as "how the hell did Charles Xavier survive when he was clearly killed in the third X-Men movie?"

Yeah, I know: don't assume anyone's dead unless you see a body. But Xavier's body exploded! It's not like there was much left of his body to even see!

Regardless, I'm pretty excited about "Days of Future Past." I love time travel plots, plus it'll be interesting to see the younger and older versions of some characters interact.

Oh and was anyone else surprised that the Silver Samurai cut off both of Wolverine's Adamantium claws? He regrew his bone claws, but it was a surprising decision nonetheless. His bone claws are strong, but nowhere near as durable or sharp as his metal ones. It'll be interesting to see if ever gets those back.
"Er, Tawni, not Tawmni, unless you are doing drag."

So in regards to the Wolverine in Japan story (I assume you mean the 4 issue limited series that PUT Wolverine on the map) - and yes, I agree. So the scene where he goes to rescue the girl after removing that thing from his chest and once again being bad ass - I honestly thought, "They're going to give us bad ass Wolverine!" when all those Ninjas appeared on the roof. I was like, "This is it! Him cutting through like 30 Ninjas and going berserk and doing what Wolverine does best!" And what happens? THEY %^#(ING CAPTURE HIM AGAIN!?!??! ARE YOU #$*$&ING KIDDING ME??!? To me, that was SUCH a wasted opportunity to show Wolverine at his best. I also thought everything they did with Viper was completely UNNEEDED and added NOTHING to the story - and even, to me - took away from it. Like her tongue, and her ability to shed skin. And as a fan of the Wolverine vs Silver Samurai fights from the X-MEN comics, I was disappointed to find out that it wasn't the same characterbut the "twist" was a nice surprise, that SORT of made up for it. And one thing I hated? So remember when Wolverine gets one of Silver Samurai's sword and it wouldn't work and he goes, "Two hands" and then it worked when he held it with two hands (because what the guy said before). That made no sense since Silver Samurai was using them as one handed weapons...
