I've read that Season 4 made a twist in the overarching myth. What do you think of this twist? Was it a good thing?

I like it so far... They brought in an elemental that's kind of odd - but I am all right with it. They sort of (finally) dealt with it for now...

Battlestar Galactica is hurteling towards its end and I am loving every crazy, screwed up, cracktastical second of it. Over the course the show had its ups and downs but damn, so far these last episodes are awesome and as a whole I love the show.

For those watching LOST Season Five:

What do you think of the Season so far? Am I the only one thinking that maybe they have jumped the shark?

Last Friday, Maia and I decided to watch the season premiere of Dollhouse. The show was created by Joss Whedon and the main character is a girl named "Echo" played by Eliza Dushku. Those who watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer would recognize her.

The premise seems a little cheesy to me -- men and women have their minds and personalities wiped. Then the company that does this can "implant" a new personality from the pieces of other individuals to create the perfect person the client wishes them to be. This can be anything from an assassin to innocent school girl.

So far... it seems decent enough. With only one episode shown so far, it's difficult to make an accurate assessment. I think it's funny that the names of some people are represented by the NATO alphabet.

Ah Dollhouse, I'm still torn over that one. On the one hand it's a Whedon show, on the other hand, I find the premise so vile that it will likely taint the whole show for me anyway. From the promos I've seen around on the net it looks too much like a scifi sexed up version of human trafficking for my blood pressure to handle.
I'll be curious to read people's opinions on it though and to see if the show lives, its on Fox after all.

It indicates at the beginning of the show that she willingly agreed to participate in the project, although it doesn't indicate her exact reasons. I assume we'll find out at a later point in the show.

Although the idea isn't light and fluffy, self-identity is an interesting topic to explore and I'm curious to see where they go with it. Given his past work, I trust Joss Whedon to treat the subject with the care it deserves. Sometimes it's necessary to explore darker ideas to get people to admit they exist and question them. I don't think the series will be as shallow as the summaries might make it seem and I doubt it will treat the issue frivolously.

I also notice that "Fred" from the series Angel is in this show. I don't know if she will be a regular character or not, but she made an appearance in the pilot.

Speaking of Joss Whedon...

Since DPX was able to find me a new copy of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer collection for a good price on eBay, I've started watching it from the beginning. I'm happy to say that I'm enjoying it as much as I did when it was first on TV. It is a series with a really good mix of elements. This is going to be fun.

You got the big box set with all the seasons? Doesn't that rule? I want to get the one for ANGEL also. I just recently saw it.

My only qualm with Buffy is near the end season it gets VERY angsty...

I got the big box of BtVS for about a third of the in-store retail price on eBay. It was definitely a good deal.

My main issue with BtVS is the same as yours, Tawmis. I tend to dislike angst and melodrama. A little here and there is okay, but shows love taking that over-the-top. It gets annoying very quickly. That's probably why I like the first season of BtVS the best. It was serious in some parts and goofy in others. The level of angst and melodrama was far less.

I've noticed that nearly every TV show falls into one of two categories:
1. Ridiculous slap-stick comedy and/or toilet humor (i.e. sitcoms)
2. Extreme amounts of angst and melodrama (i.e. one-hour shows).

BtVS can somewhat get away with it, since it's not real life (or at least, real life as we know it). If magic and demons are involved, all bets are off.

Just once I'd like to see a TV show that didn't take either extreme. Especially when it deals with real life situations. Take any of those police, doctor or lawyer shows. The situations they present are ludicrous. The worst one out of that is when a situation becomes "personal."

I kinda liked Dollhouse. It was weird and cliched at first, but by the end, I was really into it. I liked the premise of uploading all these secret agent identities into these people, and never knowing which personality flaws are going to pop up as a result.

Plus, it's Joss Whedon. You can never fully judge him on his first episode of anything. Buffy, Angel, Firefly... he always takes his shows in very interesting and unexpected directions.

Well, I sat through the pilot of Dollhouse and will certainly not be watching anymore of the show. I thought about it, but for the show to work long term, the main character Echo will have to remain a doll, never learning and evolving because she gets 'wiped' at the end of each episode. The subtleties and hardcore darkness needed to make such a premise work will never get to network tv who only sees the T&A part of the equation. Also, I can't get past the flaw in the premise which is 'why would anyone pay a huge amount of money for a copy // doll of the real deal and not pay for the real deal. It can't be secrecy because the company still knows'

So, sorry Joss Whedon but I am not up for watching a woman being sold and effectively raped every week because she has no concept of self she can't effectively consent.

Besides, Matroesjkas also had the similar premise of human trafficking and sex slave trade without putting the sci fi spin on it. That show managed to be entertainment yet not show the subject and the character as anything less vile then they are.

Well, that was my opinion and now I feel like taking out season 1 of Alias to watch.
