King's Quest III - The Pain is all coming back to me.

Post by Tawmis »

So... here I am, playing King's Quest III capturing the video as I do... and as I have made it abundantly clear, I truly despise Manahahahahahahan...

I remember this game being a nightmare. And it's all coming back to me why. The stress of having to hide everything. Making sure that levers and books and wands are all back in place. Every 30 minutes. Now, this normally would not be too big of a deal. I managed to get most of what I need the first time he left. Then had to go back and hide everything. Then he was hungry, ate, took a nap. I grabbed everything and ran outside. All I really needed at the moment was the eagle feather. As I was on the final cliff screen down, I see him fly by and drop the feather. Naturally, in my excitement, I plunge to my death off the path.

So I restored. And waited. And waited. I went around, saw him fly by a few times, and not drop the feather. So I had to return again, because Manahahahahahan was due back. Hid everything. He came back. A few minutes later, he's leaving on a journey again. So I have roughly 30 minutes again. Gather my stuff, head back down, and now spent 30 minutes waiting for him. Restored. Walked to several screens where I had seen him before.

Nothing.

Restored. Saw him fly by and not drop the feather. (And before you ask, yes, I have repeatedly checked to make sure I hadn't picked it up).

This is painful.

And the medusa thing...

I can't count how many times she turned me to stone, because I didn't turn or I didn't have "show mirror to medusa" ready.

:x

By far, the most annoying King's Quest game. Give me Cedric any day.

Good news is... I loaded it up again, and after waiting 22 minutes, the eagle finally dropped the feather (after having flown by 3 times and not dropping it...)

Maybe the eagle is Cedric's father. (Yes, I know Cedric is an owl, but stranger things have happened).

KQ3 definitely had some very annoying things, and that eagle was one of them.

Sounds like that eagle was giving you "the bird." ;)

Most definitely! Just like Red Riding Hood in KQ2 - the "random" appearance thing almost made me forget about it.

At least with KQ2, when Red Riding Hood randomly appeared in her designated area - you could interact with her and move on.

With the eagle in KQ3, he has no "specific" designated area - I had spotted him in four different screens. (And there's probably other screens that he appears on). Since he _is_ a random spawn on these specific screens - I lack to see the reason why the heck you wouldn't have him drop the feather when you see him the first time. Why have him fly by (at random times on random screens) and NOT drop his feather? That just seems like an utterly ridiculous idea.

And a small trivial gripe with the "Magic Map" in KQ3 - why even show Mahanananahahanana's house on the map if you can't just teleport outside of there? It always teleports you to the base of the cliff (at the bottom), so you have to do that ridiculous climb every time!

Another issue I take up with King's Quest III is - a lot of the times it's a waiting game. I was out collecting stuff, but knew my half hour was almost up (and I still needed more things to do) - so I quickly returned to the castle, hid my items, and literally waited for six minutes for Manahahahanana to say he was back from his trip.
