King's Quest Play Through - Commentary.

Is the game being a ROYAL pain? Need a hint? Got a problem? This is the place to discuss King's Quest!

Thanks for the (late) response ;) I actually managed to figure it out a little after I posted the question and got it up and working :)

The linked post was just the description on the installer.

I wonder if I could get my wife to sit down with me and record, as we both do a play through of King's Quest IV, together, to get that "female perspective"...

Do it. That would be more interesting than a monologue.

If she will do it - I will. We've played several games together (Freddy Pharkas, Torin's Passage, and Phantasmagoria - when they all came out - and I think I replayed KQVI with her).

Don't know if she's willing to do it (she comes back from business travel tonight), but yeah, I am going to ask.

These things are a lot more fun when there is someone to share them with.

If we still had the traffic here that we once had we could do some community play-throughs

Dude.

I love that idea. (Problem is those of active on here are pretty far spread across the world - and thus - time zones). But how cool would it be - to basically have one person "host" and play - while everyone else jumps in, on Skype, or Google Hang Outs, and comments and talks and jokes, as you play as a unit?

Adventure Gamers used to have community play-throughs. Andrea tried to do one for GK here a while back. The way they did them was to simply have everyone play a single chapter or some designated segment and then discuss that part of the game before moving on to the next part. That allows for people from different time zones and schedules to participate. Not quite as fun as playing side-by-side, but it does keep everyone in sync for discussing the game with that segment fresh in their minds.

Oh! That could work. It'd be pretty easy. You have one person play to a specific point. Save the game. Upload it. Person 2 downloads the save game, plays to the next point, and so on. By using the same save game, it ensures that all the inventory and points match up throughout the game, from start to finish.

Not what Andrea and Adventure Gamers did, but might be an approach to try. One problem is that each participant would only be playing that one segment. They could play the rest on their own, but it would diverge at that point. The old way would be more akin to a book club. Everyone reads the same chapter and then everyone gets together and discusses it. Given the nature of adventure games, especially nonlinear ones is that some can get stuck, so there might need to be some hand holding between discussions to bring them up to speed (with hints or spoilers.) Granted this is not so much of an issue with games that everyone has played before.

I could see a thread dedicated to it - where the save game is being saved also.

So for example, in the case of something simple for me to remember, I could do:

- Got the remote, the ring, and password in Lefty's
- Upload the save game

Then you could reply with:
- Used password
- Used remote
- Went up to hooker
- Used condom, slept with hooker
- Got candy.
- Upload save game

So on and so on.

(Not to imply you'd sleep with a hooker, just using the first set of rooms in LSL1). :)

So that way, everyone kind of sees what's been done so far, as each save game is uploaded.

I find the "book club" model much more interesting than that of passing a savegame.

Playing in turns via savegames makes a lot of sense for games that the players can't beat by themselves or for games where players can have a lot of creative control over the outcome of the game (e.g. in a strategy game, a community playthrough will let each player experience scenarios they might not have encountered by themselves). It doesn't make much sense for games with just one solution, especially if the participants already know it. It would then just be the same experience as playing the game by themselves, except they do less of it.

Playing through a game and then discussing it while it's still fresh in everyone's mind sounds a lot more appealing (assuming the discussion actually goes well, at least).
