LSL: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...

Post by Tawmis »

The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...

Well - the idea here is - every game (or series, where there was more than one) had some GREAT moments, but there were some, no matter how great the rest of the game was - that had some stinkers. (For example, GK3 over all was an amazing game; but ask anyone about the mustache puzzle of the game, and they will probably all groan).

So I want to see what everyone's Best/Worse moments were for a game... and if there's a series - name Best and Worse for each one, if you're so inclined.

LSL1 - best part: man in the barrel. A barrel of laughs. ;)
Worst part: none.

LSL2 best part: everything. Especially meeting Kalalau (sp?)
Worst part: trying to escape from Mama. Timing issues with newer computers (how long do you think you can hold your breath?)

LSL3 best part: everything.
Worst part: getting lost in the bamboo maze.

LSL5 best & worst part... can't actually remember. Haven't played for years.

LSL6 & 7 best part: easter eggs.
LSL6 worst part: nothing.
LSL7 worst part: no LSL8!

Best part for me was the overall humor...!
Worse part was the damn gambling... since I never gambled (as a kid, even as an adult), I couldn't stand trying to earn money that way.

I can agree with the Mama thing... again, because that felt like it was on a randomizer also.

I get the feeling you liked the LSL games over all?
As for the maze, if you had the manual, you could sing your way out of that maze easily.

LS5 was the easiest LSL game - to date.
Rath Darkblade wrote: Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:25 pm LSL6 & 7 best part: easter eggs.
LSL6 worst part: nothing.
LSL7 worst part: no LSL8!
Best LSL7 for me was Victoria, and LSL6 for best was the redhead in the pool.

See a trend? ;)

LSL1: finally being able to get around when my English became good enough to actually play instead of mimicking what my father did
Worst: being stuck "home", looks so unfinished... you'd think you could get a message that you need R&R...

LSL2: best: airport section
worst: swimming for bikini

LSL3: best: walking around in drag
Worst: toss-up between the weight lifting, the arcade games, the creep stripper and the whole Patti section

LSL5: best: piano playing section
Worst: chip installing or sleeping with Reverse

LSL6: best: anything!
worst: eyesore carpet

LSL7: best: this may be the Dutch talking but I loved Fokker being a subject.
LSL7: worst: I'm gonna say the repeating lines of Strip Liar's Dice.

I am not getting the worse reference? :D

Hah! Was it because you didn't know it was there initially and had to restore?

Wait - which Patti section? Like talking to her? Or when you controlled her?

Clearly your favorite LSL maybe?

LSL1: when you tell the cabby to take you "home", you wind up at the factory where new Larrys are being made. There's nothing you can do from there and nothing prompts you that you need to restore.

LSL2: No it's just because I couldn't get Larry to go down. ;)

LSL3: I have an intense dislike for Patti. She's nothing but someone who sleeps with absolutely anyone, and oh she plays piano, but that's it. There could've been a fun personality in there but they sure missed their chance to create one.

I have a hard time choosing between LSL1 and LSL7 since both games were so innovative, LSL1 has the brilliant text parser and LSL7 has that awesome engine...

Oh, I never tried that. I assume it's the same factory like when you fall off the the edge (where the Spanish Fly is in the window). It just lowers you down into a factory (and there's a Daventry Dragon there and such).

That's because he's a selfish lover...

Wait. How do you not hate Larry? He can't even play the piano.

Whoo-boy... here we go...

Lounge Lizards
Best: The disco scene is fun in both versions. Always a nice setpiece to look forward to.
Worst: Even if Faith asks for it, even if it was "stylish" in the 80's, it doesn't look good on Larry to pass out drugs for sex.

Looking For Love
Best: I think the airport scene is brilliant in a very twisted, masochistic way.
Worst: The repeating "lost in the jungle" cutscene, especially when you don't know you can skip it.

Pulsating Pectorals
Best: The ending sequence is fantastic. The behind-the-scenes look at Police Quest is still one of the best sight gags in gaming.
Worst: Sex aerobics? "It works for toothpaste!" Yeah... I don't get Bambi's deal in this game.

Undercover Work
Best: The theme song. This is my favourite rendition of the Larry theme.
Worst: The dialogue in this game is REALLY sleazy and unfunny. The whole game is basically that gross "locker room talk" that people who don't play Larry games usually think Larry is about.

Shape Up or Slip Out
Best: The character close-ups are really well-drawn in this game.
Worst: Its negative depiction of LGBT people.

Love for Sail
Best: I'll be damned if this game isn't fun. They put so much detail into the backgrounds, animations, dialogue, and interface. And hidden conversation topics! This game is easter eggs galore! So, yeah. Details are the best part of this game. They went all out with it.
Worst: I was never fond of the game's over-arching goal to sleep with Captain Thygh. Especially when Larry, a guy who sold flight simulators for a living and landed a passenger jet, just discovered a woman poolside who could talk about airplanes all night.

But she knew what it was, and it's used to enhance the mood. (And, that's just the reputation, not actual proof of what it really does).
It'd be like if Larry asked someone to get him some Viagra. :)

I am surprised no one thus far has mentioned escaping the airplane.

But it was just one person's (Larry) point of view. And if you boil that down to a guy who has (can) sleep with a hooker and basically any woman who gives him any chance - you know you're already dealing with a "shallow" type of person.

Remember Datadog! Drew wouldn't leave the shower!

Tawm - I think the word is "dignity". Patti has some air of dignity. Larry doesn't know the meaning of it - he'll pee anywhere you tell him to do in LSL1, pees in the kitchen of La Costa Lotta's restaurant in LSL6, he farts to clear a crowd in LSL7...
"Did I mention my name was Larry? Now would you like to have sex?"

I'll have to agree on Gary, he's one of the characters I dislike the most in the entire series. Which is why I played him during one of the Halloween Masquerades. (OK, that and the possibility of flirting with all the guys (and Jules since I didn't know which one she was) in the forum without getting it bounced back.)

He does??? Oh... you're right, he does. I remember now. (He still goes behind the truck for privacy, at least). :P

Still, I don't think you can call a room with a taco truck "a restaurant". :P Obviously La Costa Lotta cut a Lotta Corners.

Anyway, something I forgot to mention...

LSL2 worst part: trying to escape the jungle (especially the bees and the quicksand!) The former because you had to wait until just the right time (and if you missed it, you're toast!); the latter because the path through the quicksand is very easy to miss (and if you miss it, you're toast!)

(One of) the best parts: the Bond jokes and Communism jokes. 8-) Russian Communism was still a big thing when LSL2 was made, so I knew what it was like and I liked it. (Sure, they went over the top there, but since when does a Larry game NOT go over the top)? ;)

EHh, you do realize that you have to type CRAWL to get past the bees? No timing needed there...

I think swinging the vines is a lot worse...

Yes, I realised that. However, you you have to type CRAWL at just the right moment - or else it's either too early, or the bees get you.

Yes, it's a little tricky to know when to swing to the next vine - but I probably died from the bees a lot more than from the piranhas. ;)
