SQ3 Arnoid Possible Timing Issue?

In Space No One Can Hear You Clean, er, Scream. But if you post in this forum about Space Quest - someone's sure to hear you. I think. Try it, anyway!

SQ3 Arnoid Possible Timing Issue?

Post by wolverine79936 »

Alright. I first started noticing the game acting weird on Phleebhut, where you have to kill Arnoid. When I played this game back in the 90s on my old Mac LC, I had no problem getting Arnoid under the pulsating pods so they could eat him. But ever since I went PC, I've been having major problems with that method of killing him. I was playing this game again tonight in ScummVM and was having trouble getting him to follow me to the pods. Either he would kill me right as I was about to go under the outcropping, or he would never show up on the screen to die.

Any ideas?

I also noticed this problem more prominently in Astro Chicken. I can't get the chicken to flap or move or anything, therefore I can't get to the secret message to use my decode ring on. :(

Nasty... I played the GOG version for ScummVM some time ago but I couldn't stand it, went to DOSBox before I even visited Phleebhut. I do recall problems during Astro Chicken. Did you purchase your game via GOG?

Astro Chicken's "flying" is toggled by the Up arrow. Press once to start flapping and press once again to stop flapping. Just in case that is the issue.

I am not a fan of ScummVM for older DOS games (I get the benefits for games like King's Quest VI where it can use the higher end graphics)... But if you got it from GoG, might I recommend heading here to upvote the fact that they should include all files for games when packaged with ScummVM:

Alright. I wasn't thinking about VirtualBox or DOSBox. Or that there were missing files. As for the original version of what I am playing, I had my old Macintosh original disks that I extracted this from. Yeah, it was painful, but got the better audio in my opinion. :)

All of my resources are for the DOS version and the Mac version rules out DOSBox. Your only options are an emulator like Basilisk II or ScummVM. I am not sure if ScummVM supports the Mac version or not. You can check with the ScummVM people for sure, but at least be sure you have all of the required data files: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Data ... 1.29_games

If the only reason that you are trying to run the Mac version is for the sound, have you ever heard the game with a Roland MT-32? It beats the pants off of any other version.

Munt, the MT-32 emulator is nearly perfect. You can find my Munt SQ3 installer here: http://sierrahelp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3925 You will only need supply the DOS files and the MT-32 ROMS.

The above mentioned installer will also give you SB wave support so you can hear the very first time that Roger's voice is heard.
