BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
Re: BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
Even after getting a walkthrough (you missed take 44, 45 and 46 where I struggle with the gem before I give in, look up the command and see it is "put gem in mouth" , then discover it's a maze and don't want to map it because I died trying, then decided to go for walkthrough play because that is the 3rd puzzle in a row I look up), even now that I am playing after having read the walkthrough, I'm stuck. I don't know what command to use to get to operate the lift.

And then there's guards at a tower?

Before that.
First you're at the space station, then you start in the woods of Labion, then you move on to the chasm and hunter, then you climb down to that cave and the canyon, you escape that through the cave with the squid, then comes the cave river, then you go outside with the wall, then the platform, then Vohaul's lair.
So by now, thanks to a walkthrough, I finished the game with around 12 non-self-induced deaths and restores-because-this-is-going-wrongs.
It doesn't have as many sections that I don't want to do again as SQ3 (with Arnoid, the robot fight and the plane fight) but I still prefer SQ3.
Since I'm also making screenshots I try to get every death on printscreen, I went to look for the death video again. Turns out I missed 28 deaths! And that's just from the ones Whitman posted on YT - so I'll check the game data to see if there's still more. One of them is getting killed in the Pinkun canyon so I'll have to do a lot of playing to just get that...

Re: BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
Oh? Which deaths would you rather not do again, BBP? Just wondering. SQ2 is one of my favourite-unfavourite Sierra games, because it's so challenging due to its many ways to die.
Re: BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
The one I'm not looking forward to is the Pinkun death, because I will have to do the maze again for that. All the others I can just use my saves for.
What I also didn't appreciate is how finnicky it gets to what location you have to be in order to get something done (ie anything you do after which the game replies "move closer"). It was a tad annoying trying to get on the log, it was very annoying when searching Vohaul's body, and it was deadly at the bit at the end where you have to enter the escape pod with that robot on your heels. If you fail you can run away if you're in time but you have to do all that walking again.
I tried lying in the pod until that thing came back, but it disappears once you get into the pod.

Re: BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
Um, what's the Pinkun death? I'm confused. Do you mean that death where Roger gets eaten by the plant?
I agree that the game was far too finicky about being at the right place to do something important. But it's not the only Sierra game to be guilty of that - the same things happen near the end of Leisure Suit Larry 2 (e.g. being at the right place to avoid the killer bees, or to swing from one vine to another).
As for the plant maze - LSL2 has that one, too. Remember the quicksand maze? One false step and that's goodnight, Larry ...

Re: BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
The bees in LSL2 are no problem, if you type crawl. And the quicksand is a lot more forgiving. Plus in SQ2 you also need to go back the way you came.
The Pinkuns are the tiny pink creatures. You save one when he is caught in a snare. If you don't you'll get killed when you enter their canyon.

Re: BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
The bees in LSL2 aren't a problem, but it's finding the right place to crawl that's the issue. I can't remember how forgiving the quicksand was - I can't remember it being too forgiving.
Oh yes, now I remember the Pinkuns. But why do you need to do the plant maze to get to them? I forget (sorry).
By the way, the SQ2 remake is far easier (especially the plant maze). If you're missing deaths, you may wish to try that one.

Re: BBP vs SQ (spoiler topic)
Rath - you need to get through the maze to get the berries you need to get to the swamp.
All my saves from after I crossed the swamp were after I got the berries and I got the berries after freeing the Pinkun (because then he'll show you to get the berries).
So in order to get that death, I had to get the berries again, but without saving Pinkun.
While recording I used Alt + F12 (thanks Qbix for teaching me that one!) to fast forward to the death scenes you need to wait for, like the 40 minute countdown. Also the alien runs on a slow timer and there was a point where I looked up when he's going to pop up - I even did some of the death scenes before getting there!
Unfortunately since the fast forward uses Alt, screenshots are Ctrl + F5 and videos are Ctrl + Alt + F5, I accidentally made a few movies of scenes - in one case it meant I don't have screen shots of the death screen (the using plunger too early) so there's some playing still left for me.
There's another one I missed - choking for being in the glass jar too long. With the glass cutter I waited like forever for that death (while holding Alt + F12 no less) but didn't get it. I then assumed it was because I had the glass cutter. So I did it Vohaul's lair again, without picking up that thing. The death didn't come. But oddly I could cut the glass - without having the glass cutter.
This may be due to having a hacked copy but it's weird all the same.
