LOL! If you think 35 GB is large, you'd freak over games like Hitman 2 (150 GB), Red Dead Redemption II (115 GB) or Assassin's Creed Odyssey (98 GB). Those aren't unusually large, either, so something like 35 GB is definitely considered "small" nowadays.

Six hours to download 10 GB? What's your internet speed because for a 10 GB game to take that long to download, it must be insanely slow.
Hmm, strange. I tried to measure my speeds on Speedtest.net, and it told me that my average download speed was 3.79 Mbps, and my average upload speed was 0.65 Mbps. :| I don't know how fast or slow that is, but it generally suffices for everything I do (e.g. forums, the very occasional Youtube video, etc.) So ... *shrug*

However, when I try to download a game through Steam or GOG, my download speed slows down considerably. I don't remember how slow it was on Steam, but on GOG, it rarely goes above 1-1.2 Mbps or so. Is that very slow? No wonder it takes so long.

That's one reason why I prefer having a DVD backup. ;)

Used the same site just now to test mine (to compare) - 235.56mbps down, 11.64mbps up.
But again, if you're just mostly surfing the web (forums, youtube, normal websites), it's not going to be an issue... until you need to download a large game file from GoG. :)

So 8 megabits per second (mbps) equals 1 megabyte per second (MB/s). You can use this website to check or just type it into Google and it'll convert it for you as well.

This means Rath is getting, on average, around 0.47 MB/s. That's just south of half a megabyte per second, which explains the long download times. In contrast, Tawmis is getting 29 MB/s.

Hmm, that's weird. I just tried Speedtest again; this time my results were 4.72 Mbps (download) and 0.59 Mbps (upload).

Strange that my results and Tawmis's should be so different, but that's the way things are in Australia. I just have to put up with ADSL 2+ until the National Broadband Network (NBN) rolls out - in my area, it should roll out in the next couple of months.

Then again, another factor could be that I live in an apartment block, so the supply comes to a box that sits outside on a power pole. From there, it gets divided among however many people live in that block. :|

Not entirely too strange - because it depends on the Internet Provider you're going through. For example, our Cable Internet has different plans you can go with to get better speeds (we're on the basic one). But that can definitely explain it. Now if you were in the United States, with the same provider I was with, and seeing such a glaring difference; then yes, that would be odd. But they may do things entirely different in Australia and have different caps and throttling that they do.

The whole point of me doing the speedtest in this thread was to explain why you may be seeing such delays and I don't. (It also depends on how many leaps something takes; where the source is located, for example, that will all impact speed).

Hmm. I'm on an relatively old plan, which I didn't change because I didn't need anything else. That may also explain why my speeds are so slow. I'll change it as soon as I can find something better.

Tawm, your reference to how many leaps and where the source is located - that might be it, actually. GOG's servers are located in Europe and the USA. If you're downloading games from GOG from a US server, no wonder your speeds are so much faster. I don't think there's a GOG server here in Australia, so we have to put up with very slow speeds. Sigh. :(

That's another reason why having a DVD is better for me. :) It's either that, or having to download games from Europe ... and as games get bigger, the download times get longer.

I once tried to download "Dragon Age: Origins" (about 21 GB). I started the download at 4pm on Saturday afternoon, and it was still going at 11am the next morning. I stopped it and asked GOG for "wallet funds", which they granted. That was nice. I'd have preferred to have the game, of course, but oh well!

True, but you can back up the games you download from both GOG and Steam. Sure, you have to download them first (and in your case, that might be a real pain to do) but it's not like you'd need to redownload a game if you uninstall it.

Indeed. One of the things I enjoy about gog is downloading the game and just keeping them on my External drive to install whenever I want; rather than having to dig up the media (whether it be disks or discs)
