Game: The Witcher 1 Enhanced Edition.

Post by Tawmis »

So, from Rath's thread - and thanks to DPX - I picked up The Witcher 1 and 2.

So when the game starts - I picked the easiest mode. I usually do this with every game to get a feel for it for awhile. Then go back and do normal mode.

So I picked the easiest mode - as I said - which makes the game "easier" (health, combat, potions, etc).

Let me say - the combat system in this game is ATROCIOUS. Perhaps the worse I've ever played in an RPG type game.

I can barely tell what I am doing - and the fact that it took me 3 minutes to kill a normal guy? Either I am doing it wrong (entirely possible) or this combat system is as atrocious as I believe.

EDIT: Read this, which helps explain why he will suddenly just "stand around" - https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/The_Witcher_combat

Indeed. Pretty retched combat system. Going to uninstall it now and see how Witcher 2 goes.

Sorry, Tawm. :( I haven't played Witcher 1, but yes ... thanks to DPX, I skipped it and went straight to Witcher 2. (Thanks, DPX!) :)

The combat in Witcher 2 is very smooth, and sounds much easier than Witcher 1. (I wouldn't say that it is easier since I haven't played W1, but it sounds like it's much easier!)

Please, let us know what you think. :)

In The Witcher, the combat system is weird. It not only plays out like a rhythm game, but also revolves around three different styles (Strong, Quick, and Group). The rhythm part is needing to click to hit the enemy at very specific times, whereas the style indicates the severity of the hit or how likely you'll do damage to the enemy.

Despite using the Aurora engine (which was first seen in 2002's Neverwinter Nights), I can see what CDPR was going for and on paper it's not an terrible idea; however, the execution of that idea was unnecessarily complex and incredibly unwieldy.

Fortunately, CDPR ditched the Aurora engine and the rhythm/style combat system in favor of a more traditional third-person action combat system in the second and third games by developing their own game engine called the REDengine.

It's amazing that the Witcher franchise survived the first game.

Had I not heard so much about Witcher 2 and 3, I would have never gave this franchise a chance as a customer, if Witcher 1 was all I knew (when it came out).

Apparently the original Witcher 1 was even WORSE and the Enhanced Edition was meant to make it more playable. I don't know what it looked like but I thought I read somewhere that it was more of an overhead top-down game than 3rd person.
