I couldn't even accurately ask that since Manfred von Richthofen flew many different planes. I think he's often identified with the Fokker DR.I because it's the plane he was flying when he was shot down and killed.

Also, French was popular in Frederick's court, so that might've been even more important as far as he was concerned. Whatever the case, the French name stuck, but later on people nicknamed it "the Blue Max."

Yeah, that took some googling after you hint. Wasn't sure if it was called by it's official name in the game (Pour le Mérite) since it was French or if they called it by the German name in the game.
