That was my only issue one of my issues with what became of the 90's era - it was no longer clean. It was entirely too busy and cluttered. But they looked awesome.

It's what happens when the people in-charge demand that every important character is not only on the cover, but that the positioning looks "cool" and says something — even if it's barely related at all — to the content of the comic book itself.

The 90s in particular was a bad decade for this. I think Jim Lee (no relation to Stan Lee) is, in large part, responsible for this trend, especially after the X-Men covers (one of which is a wrap-around cover that Tawmis posted) he did. Lee's artwork became very popular at the time.

Another artist who was very popular at the time was Jae Lee (no idea if he's related to Jim Lee, but probably the only connection is they're both Korean-American). His artwork just looked way too weird and horror-like. It didn't really fit the feel of the typical action-packed comic of the 90s. Nowadays I can appreciate some of the aspects of Jae Lee's work, but it's not by favorite, although it still beats Kelley Jones by a mile.

Overall, what bugged me the most was when there was a multi-part story arch that spanned numerous different comics. The reason for this (aside from the task of collecting the individual issues) was that the artwork was different from one character or team's comic to another. This wasn't always the most obvious when reading individual issues on a monthly basis, but if you got a collected edition in the form of a trade paperback or graphic novel, it became very noticeable and quite jarring.

Agree. Jae Lee is very talented - but his work can work - mostly for darker stories. Like they launched HELLSHOCK (which always kind of reminded me of THE CROW).

But I wasn't too much of a fan of their work on Marvel.

And it's not bad - just not my flavor.

This. Was. The. Worse.

Especially if you weren't collecting all the titles.
Especially, if - for example - you collect X-Men but not Avengers - and Cyclops is alive in X-Men #31, the story continues in Avengers #48 - where Cyclops dies, and in X-Men #32, they're suddenly at Cyclop's funeral.

And if you didn't pick up Avengers #48, the X-Men run doesn't make sense.

Was on the googles looking for something else entirely - when I stumbled upon the fact that Marvel released a Card Game in 1978. And I don't know how I wasn't aware and how I never got these.

Whoops - I was going to ask where Superman or Batman were, but then I remembered they're from DC Comics.
