Thexder

Post by Nevac »

Does anyone play this game? Used to love playing this years ago almost 2 decades ago. I find the game is actually pretty hard for it's time especially if you're trying to beat levels without the use of shields. I replayed it not too long ago and recorded it in DOSBox managed to beat almost all 16 levels without the use of shields. I did have to use shields on levels 10, 13, 14 and 15. So has anyone here managed to finish it without shields fully? I might give it another go later, I had to use the shields on those stages due to some dumb mistakes.

I find the original is the best and most challenging with Firehawk being more of an action game as it's a lot faster paced but that final boss on mission 08 is hard. I just couldn't get into the Thexder 95 version just didn't like the game setup and the fact that you need to collect ammo.

Oh lastly if you are going to play the original Thexder make sure you set the machine type in DOSBox to Tandy as it looks and sounds much better and Thexder not being an AGI game will not run in SCUMMVM.

15 views and no replys? Surely someone here has played it and if you haven't maybe you should give it a go?

I played it a long time ago. I can't say I liked it. The controls were very difficult to use and overall, the game lacked substance. That's my opinion, anyway. I'm sure there are others out there like yourself who love the game.

Yeah I remember when any of my friends tried to play the game they always complained about the controls though I have no problems with them probably because I'm so used to it. I'm sure I can't be the only person that likes this game?

I highly doubt you're the "only one" who likes Thexder. But I think you might have difficulty finding many people on this board who really enjoyed it. Most of the posters dislike action-oriented games (going so far as to find some Adventure games unplayable due to action sequences).

I never had a problem with action, but I'm incredibly picky when it comes to interfaces. A lot of people loved Grim Fandango, but I hated it. Why? The interface pissed me off. Thexder falls into that category as the controls were damn tough to use.

Thexder Neo

Post by Nevac »

Just found out they made a remake to this game and it came out on October 1st, it's made by Square Enix and it's called Thexder Neo essentially a remake of the original Thexder. It's available exclusively for the PSP on the Playstation Network for a mere $9.99 Here's the website about the game it has pictures and a trailer.

From what I've played visually the game is leagues ahead of the original obviously and new and updated music tracks. The game mechanics are slightly different and many of the hidden energy boost enemies are removed as with the way the mech moves it would be impossible to get in this version your mech behaves in a similar method to how it works in Firehawk. But you cannot obtain any of the new weapon upgrades in Firehawk you only have shields and your standard laser but at least your laser will only shoot enemies it can hit it won't attempt to target enemies that are behind walls which is a nice change the only downside is you won't be able to find hidden enemies using the laser. Like the original you get bonus energy when you complete a level without the use of shields too.
