Tawm - nope. You never play as multiple characters in Monkey Island, only as Guybrush Threepwood (a wannabe pirate). It's lots of fun.

I remember a computer game where I needed to be stealthy, gather information, interrogate guards, rescue people, and sometimes kill targets as well, but I was NOT an assassin.

No, this game's story takes place in 2007, although the game itself was released earlier than that.
