No, it wasn't Dune. Definitely remember the character you control goes to different worlds.
And the composer of the music for the game was the same guy who did the music for Daggerfall (that other old game).

Thank you for being so precise. :)

The pieces that this guy collects ... are they pieces of a key? Pieces of a crystal? Pieces of wood? Pieces of eight? Am I getting close? :)

They're some kind of seal piece, from each world.

Hmm. What kind of seal is it? Does it seal away some Evil That's Been Released On The World(TM)? ;)

(I presume it's not this kind of seal, or collecting the pieces would be ... mucky. And rather pointless) ;)

No, definitely not those kinds of seals. As a matter of fact, the cover of the game is the same as the third book - all fire.

Unfortunately, that doesn't tell me much. *shrug* "Third book" implies a series, but the only series I can think of right now is Harry Potter, and the 3rd book there isn't about fire. (The 4th one is, though).

Wild guess: is the book "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"?

Well, I don't recall (and there might be?) a Harry Potter computer game. (My first clue was it was a computer game after all).
And that it's a game based on a book.
Again, not sure if there is a Harry Potter computer game? (Although, I know there's one for the console - the Harry Potter LEGO games... not sure if that was ever made for PC? So I can see where you're going with that... because I think it was on PC for the Harry Potter LEGO game too)
However...
When DPX guessed "Dune" I did say, "Not Discworld. But the title definitely started with a "D" now that you mention it!
Which would rule out Harry Potter, even if you just went by the title of "Prisoner of Azkaban" :)
I did give a pretty big hint about the composer of the game in question, was also the composer who did Daggerfall. (Another game)
And the fact - as you said it's a computer game based on a series of books with AT LEAST three books based on my clue. (But there may be more than three books)

But still - I will give another hint.

I know the artist - of both the third book (and thus the computer game's cover) was a well known fantasy artist named Keith A. Parkinson

Keith didn't do the cover of Diablo II. And Diablo (the series) isn't based on a series of books. The game came out before the books. :D

Since we're on the subject of books, I will use that as my hint...

The computer game, based on the books - the first book of the series came out February 1990. The game itself would come out November 1994. The last book of the series came out September 1994.

Now you got it! It is indeed Death Gate!

My next clue was going to be "I ran a BBS that was heavily influenced by the book series."

And I am sure if you search "BBS" on the forums, one of my posts would show up about my BBS being called "The Nexus" (the portal in the series) and how for a long time I used "Hugh the Hand" (one of the characters) and how it was influenced by the books "The Death Gate Cycle." :)

So what finally gave it away? Or was it a googling of 90s computer games that start with "D" :D

EDIT: Sure enough search "BBS" on here - first page:

Nope, I just googled "Keith Parkinson and Eric Heberling" and "Death Gate" came up straight away.

Very nice! Good use of the clues!

Eric Heberling did a NUMBER of scores and a large number of them were from LEGEND ENTERTAINMENT which did a lot of books - including Death Gate and Sword Of Shanara.

Hmm. *thinks of the next game*

I remember a game where you collect three pieces, jump into and out of pits, eat (or save!) candy, and make a call.
