[2021] The Time To Guess Is At Hand!

Post by *The Butler »

Please make guesses as your regular self as I am about to disable the MASQ accounts around November 7th, 2021. :)

And to add spice because there are so few people this time - please LIE about your MASQ in the guessing!

For example, I might say: "I think the Butler is DeadpoolX............"

Even though, clearly I know I am the Butler.

This will throw off anyone who might try to sneak a peek at the spoilers where it says "The Butler is ............me..........." for example! :)

I will leave the other 2021 MASQ threads open until November 1st or 2nd, before locking them down - leaving this one open until November 7th, or until everyone's made guesses and/or conversation in this thread dies down. :)

Please remember to use the SPOILER tags when making your guesses so you don't ruin it for anyone else!

I also recommend adding "....." at the end of the person's true name so the spoiler tags look longer than the names! That way it doesn't make it too easy for others to guess without actually checking spoilers!

So for example rather than say "I think The Butler is Tawmis"

You'd say "I think The Butler is Tawmis........"

Also reveal who you are in Spoilers, so when you post guessing others - it's not easy to see, "Hey Tawmis didn't guess who the Butler was! He must be the Butler!"

So for example I would do:

MASQ01 was BBP.....................
MASQ02 was none other than me!
MASQ03 was clearly Jules
MASQ04 Was probably notbobsmith because of how he answered Question01
MASQ05 must be Rath, as the last person!

Also if someone guesses who you are put the Correct or Incorrect in spoilers so it doesn't sway someone else's guess unless they want to see the spoiler.

Feel free to put the "justification" for your guesses in the spoiler, when you're guessing for extra points and fun!

The MASQs were:

Alphabetically -

*Gamera
*Moriarty
*Reading is FUNdamental

The people wearing MASQs were:

Alphabetically -

MusicallyInspired
BBP
goatmeal
Jules
notbobsmith
Semi-Happy Partygoer
Rath Darkblade
DeadpoolX

Wait.

What's this now?

The Guest List shows more members then MASQs?

That's right - since there was only three actually MASQs - it would have made it TOO easy to guess who is who.

So - can you discover which of these GUESTS are behind the MASQs?

Feel free to begin guessing in this thread using the rules stated (in regards to using SPOILER tags and ensuring you put ".........." in front or behind or both, next to each guess so it's not easy to tell by the size of the spoiler space for others!)

And to add spice - feel free to LIE about your MASQ!

Mrs. White, you've been paying our friend, the blackmailer, ever since your husband died under, shall we say, mysterious circumstances?

Let's see...

I think *Gamera was BBP.......................... because *Gamera's limericks and mentions of King's Quest are reminiscent of BBP.

I think *Moriarty Notbobsmith.......................... because he mentioned at the beginning of the MASQ that he wouldn't be able to post too frequently here, and *Moriarty didn't.

I think *Reading is FUNdamental is DeadpoolX...........................me.................................! because ...........................................................................................................................................................I know who I was.

Hopefully my guesses hit close to the mark. Thanks, Tawm! The MASQ was fun to read, though I wish more people could participate this year.

I think Gamera was DeadpoolX.................me because some of the limericks seem his style..................................................

I think Reading is FUNdamental was Rath..................... because he was the only one who posted regularly......................................

I think Moriarty was BBP......................... because I forgot who the third participant was and I know it wasn't Rath.................

And Rath you were incorrect.................................. with me.

You know, in hindsight - guessing as MASQs and lying about who they are as a MASQ guess - would have been better.

Because the three people who guess will quickly reveal who the three MASQs were... unless those who didn't participate make guesses (which I doubt they would).

Also next time - I will ask people to just DM me directly if interested and not reply - so there's no written evidence of who said they were interested for other forum goers to potentially see.

So a locked thread that says "DM me your MASQ ID if interested or if you have questions" or something.

Assuming that we get enough interest next year. 3 people MASQ is too easy. Still fun, over all - but the guessing part at the end is pretty easy. :)

So maybe the idea of the DM me and don't post you're interested would help keep the mystery alive, even if it's only 3.

And I'd do what I did this year - and list more people than there were MASQs.

And maybe I will create some "Red Herring" MASQs if there's a low count that I'd control and post as.

And we'd have the additional step of figuring out which MASQs were me as Red Herrings.

Just spit balling ideas here - so if next year rolls around I have it all written down. And everyone can comment here on what they think of these ideas.

In summary, in the event of low attendance in the future -
  • Create a thread, lock it that says "DM me your MASQ ID if interested
  • I would create Red Herring Accounts to post as
  • People would have to figure out which ones are red herring accounts (done by two lies and truth game, for example)
  • People would guess as their MASQ ID (and purposely lie or tell the truth) in their spoiler guess about themselves
  • Add more "attending" than there were actually MASQs for

My guess has disappeared! :(

I guessed Reading is FUNDamental for Rath and Gamera for SHP.

I did indeed play Moriarty and I'm glad I've managed to fool one (and blind-guess the other).
Why Moriarty? Again a bit of a hurry-pick - wanting to stay away from cartoon characters but also tying some things together, things that warm me and make me angry :
-I was given the nickname "Sherlock" at work - something I loved, but which doesn't matter much in a few months time;
-Back in 2000-2001 I was a massive fan of the musical Cats after seeing it in London - I confessed to this here several times. I saw the 1998 video way too many times, can play some of the music and still own (and sometimes play) several different cast recordings. Unfortunately in December 2019 Tom Hooper brought an unsightly and inaudible version of the show to the big screen - so bad it made Andrew Lloyd-Webber buy a therapy dog - and when he was asked by UA why he wanted to label it as a therapy dog whenever he took a flight between the US and UK, he replied : "Just look at what Tom Hooper did to my musical Cats!" He didn't need to show any further doctor's proof.
My favourite song in Cats is Macavity the Mystery Cat. Macavity is based on Moriarty.

Since I was on vacation for some time during the Masq, I didn't play around as much as I usually do, which may have added to the confusion. On the 29th I had a Cat day, referring to kitties in all my replies. The limerick I posted in the poetry thread (normally something I do dawdle with but not this year because I had better things to do (as in, a lot of nothing :D )

In the Boddy thread I was Mr Boddy for the first time, wahoo, sadly there wasn't too much of it to do.

In the Trapped In A Sierra Game topic I referred to SQ3, SQ6 and Lighthouse (trying to masq the scent), but TITM (The Incredible Toon Machine) should have been a dead give-away. :D

In I Question Your Character I mentioned Shylock - I saw the Merchant of Venice at the same occasion when I saw Cats, so I was still tying my character together in a way that you'd really have to get down to the BB Dark Side to figure it out. :D
Also, I mentioned Alonzo. That's one of the cats in Cats. He's black-white and sort of the one in command below Munkustrap. Sometimes he shadow-dances in Macavity the Mystery Cat.

Small James Bond hint in What Are You Doing In That Room. I do know my Bonds. :D

A-Z : Chatter is my job, Oscar (Nato), X-ray (NATO) are phone alphabet letters which I use all the time for my work.
Still more obscure is Y-incision, used by medical examiners to cut open bodies. I was quite the Dr G fan.
Odie is from my Kitty day, he's the dog in Garfield.

Time for Games - more smoke screen - though I did write a guide on Fantasy Empires - plus Virtual Pet - I used to play Catz 4 a lot.

2 lies 1 truth:
I have never seen the Sound of Music.
In my neck of the woods kissing is (or was before Corona) a fairly common greeting between family and friends. Men don't kiss men but women kiss women.
I watch a lot of car shows due to my dad being a Car SOS fan.
One Song To Erase From Memoy - technically all three but I described my Wuthering Heights bane elswehere on the forum.
Sadly I have 0 cats.

And is this post going to screw up Google or what!

For next year I'd like to suggest we try to round up Masquers in September - we'll have the time to come up with a good Masq idea as well.

Same (Spain), and how I grew up.
Really close friends, I will still kiss on the cheek, out of habit, honestly.

Have they not? ;)

I think it's cool that despite the low count, not everyone was able to guess everyone. <3

Nope! :) BBP was *Moriarty, and NBS wasn't in MASQ. So. ;)

Of course, I don't expect people to rush in and say "I was so-and-so" straight away. Real life takes precedence, after all. :)

Now, because of the low count of people in the MASQ - my first post did say, feel free to LIE about your own MASQ.

So for example, I could say "I think the Butler is DeadpoolX" - even though I am obviously not DeadpoolX.

I figured that would make it so people could say they were someone else in case someone looked at spoilers before making their own guess as to who is who.

So, NBS was in the MASQ.

And that should tell you who he was. :)
