Yeah. I've always wondered about freeing those lobsters... not a sea food person, myself.
And not a farmer, out of site, out of mind.
But seeing them, bound, just waiting to get picked and steamed. :(

I loved this story.

It had me wonder since aside from stays in France over twenty years ago, I've never seen lobster being sold in a supermarket in that manner. I guess it's too expensive to keep them that way.

There has been a lot of hubbub about lobster welfare in the past year in Netherlands following a campaign by our animal rights political party Partij Voor De Dieren, numerous municipalities have now banned selling live lobster on marketplaces. In several countries in Europe, like Switzerland, and soon in The Netherlands as well, it will be illegal to chuck a lobster in a pan of boiling water. The notorious lobster shriek may just be air escaping, but lobsters can feel pain.

Viewing this I'm more concerned about the well-being of the animals in the interim - banded up not for handling, but mainly to prevent them attacking each other - I found they're not usually fed in the supermarket tank and lobsters display cannibalistic behaviour when in overpopulated areas. So they can't eat, can't groom themselves and are in cramped conditions - not to mention stress caused by people tapping the glass, or the lights being on for as long as the supermarket's open (isn't that 24/7 in the US?) When they're transported to their selling place they're not in water either, if they're going to the other side of the country they're out of the water for more than a day, can't be fun either.

It took Leon days to get his dexterity back in most of his claws and weeks to get the movement back in its right pincher.
Which goes to show that, if you want to rescue a lobster, don't just chuck it back, give it some Lobster Physio first.
