Ah, great. So when Skyrim throws Giant Spiders at you, and they spit venom and jump at you, it actually feels like actual venom and spider stuff ... *shudder* Sounds ghastly.

And when you step on a pressure plate and it throws up fire ... OK, you don't actually get burned, it just feels like you got burned?

Oh come on. You KNOW what Tawmis means, and it's not that you physically feel pain in VR.

Of course I know that! It's all in the mind, I know. But it's probably not a good idea for an arachnophobe like me to play around with Giant Spiders (even if they're imaginary).

They are working on adding touch sensations, so if you want to have the feeling of spiders crawling over you mouth, you can do that.

Yeah... I think I'll pass on that. I wouldn't be against mild tactile sensations, such as if you're shot or stabbed in a game where you'd feel a buzzing sensation or something similar to physically indicate you were wounded.

Probably the best use of tactile response in VR would be with gloves, where you could actually FEEL weapons and objects or the environment, etc. That technology technically existed a good two decades ago (I remember testing something like this back at SIGGRAPH in San Antonio, TX), but there was no realistic way to implement it that was both available to the masses and affordable.

*shudder* I can't stand the thought of spiders crawling over anyone, much less inside someone's mouth. Even googling the word "spider" and looking at the pictures gives me the creeps. What sort of "wonderful weirdo" (to quote the article) would want something like this? Is this technology new, or...? (I don't mean VR, I mean the "taste" angle).

Fair enough, it could be used to simulate something like the taste of ice-cream. But ... spiders? *shudder* No, thanks!

(By the way, it's not just spiders that give me that reaction. Spiders are the worst, but any other creepy-crawlies -- ants, rats, or *shudder* roaches -- are the same. Is that weird? I hope not!)

Billions of people suffer from arachnophobia, so that one is not weird.
People hate rats because they think they're dirty.
And roaches, they're gross. And neigh indestructible.

That said, having grown up 2 years in Puerto Rico I overcame any fear of spiders real quick.
Whenever it was raining/hurricane season - spiders, lizards, etc. - this included tarantulas would find their way inside the house.
So it wasn't uncommon for tarantulas to be on the wall, on the floor, on your bed.
These days, unless it's a black widow - if I find a spider in the house, I relocate them outside rather than kill them so that they can spin their webs and help get rid of the fly/mosquito population.
And rats, well I used to have three pet rats about 10 or more years ago, which I'd let sit on my shoulder.

Yeah, but you don't live in Australia like Rath does. That country has some of the most deadly (and unusually aggressive) creatures known to humanity.

Check out the Cone Snail (a snail that can literally paralyze you), Stonefish, Blue-ringed Octopus (which apparently carries enough venom in a single bite to kill 26 adults), Irukandji jellyfish (whose venom is 100 times stronger than the venom injected by a cobra), Box jellyfish, Redback spider (it's from the same family that the North American Black Widow is from, only it's far worse), Sydney Funnel Web spider (basically an eight-legged demon), and the Australian Paralysis Tick.

Actually, not everything in Australia can kill you. Some of the sheep are harmless.

Seriously, though, I don't travel around Australia much. (I work in healthcare, so that doesn't leave me a lot of time off). So, I haven't seen many of those tiny horrors.

In about 30 years of living in Australia, I was bitten by two spiders and one wasp. I guess that makes me the luckiest, the most cautious, or the least adventurous guy in Australia (or all three). Regardless, I'm not keen to go anywhere near those lethal things.

The number one thing on that list is the cassowary, a bad-tempered fiend from Hades that can run as fast as a horse and stab you with a five-inch, dagger-like claw. Don't make those things angry. They'll mess you up good.

I also noticed the saltwater crocodiles listed there. Yes, the salties (as they're known here in Australia, or 'crocs') are definitely killers, no doubt about it. As a race, they've survived since the days of the dinosaurs, which should command a healthy respect in anyone's book.

Want some fun? Google "NT News crocodile headlines", and you'll see the sort of silly things that people in the NT (Northern Territory) get up to with crocs. The NT is hot most of the year, and there are crocodiles living in swamps and marshlands there. (Think the Netherglades in Florida, and you'll get the right idea). Just be warned: some of the headlines in the NT News are NSFW. Some instances include "Surf's up, nude" (about a "daredevil" who hunted crocodiles while in his birthday suit), or "What a croc head" (about someone who went swimming with crocodiles). Some people are just plain crazy.
