Hunter Hunted in Windows 10
As I mention in another thread, I upgraded to Windows 10. When I first tried to run Hunter Hunted, the videos would play only audio. I couldn't watch the movies in a player either. I installed the K-Lite Codec Pack which solved a similar problem with the SWAT 2 movies, but didn't fix things with Hunter Hunted. I could watch the video with a player, but I still only get audio in game. I also tried installing the Indeo 5 codec which worked in a previous thread with Window 7, but it still didn't fix the video issue. So I tried a clean install with Collector's installer and now I have a new problem: the game won't run at all. When I try to launch, it says: "Hunter Hunted must be installed before it can be played. Please run SETUP to install Hunter Hunted." I've attached the diagnostic log. For some reason, it looks like the Hunter.ini and Sierra.ini files weren't created. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Hunter Hunted in Windows 10
The missing INI is the same as the other thread posted here - where Collector recommended a clean install. Sadly the person never returned and that was their sole post.

I have not tried anything on Win11. I have it on one of my laptops, but it may be some time before I can try any of these things on it. The Sierra.ini should be in the Windows directory, which is protected. The installer is set to run at an elevated level, but perhaps Win11 is more restrictive. I do not know what the state of the VirtualStore is on Win11. You could try a manual edit of the file. The Sierra.ini should have the following at the bottom (replace the '<path-to-installed-folder>' with the actual path):
If it is there but you are still getting the must be installed message, it may not be finding the game. You may need to install to a path with no spaces since modern NTFS no longer tracks short names by default and the Sierra.ini does not recognize quotes in path to include spaces as path characters.
Code: Select all
[Hunter]
InstallPath=<path-to-installed-folder>
CDPath=<path-to-installed-folder>

And that seems to have done the trick! Although I am using Windows 10, not 11. My Sierra.ini file originally was:Collector wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 7:47 pm I have not tried anything on Win11. I replaced the Hunter portion with this:
Code: Select all
[Hunter]
InstallPath=C:\Games\Sierra\Hunter Hunted
CDPath=D:\
The last time I did this (8 years ago!? Geez) I tried registering the codec but it didn't work: viewtopic.php?t=4194#p54517
Should I try this now?
Honestly, I still think it's amazing that a game released in 1996 intended for Windows 95 can function at all. Kudos to your installer.
Re: Hunter Hunted in Windows 10
Give it a try. Don't know about Win10-11, but by Win7 the Indeo codec still shipped with Windows, but was not registered by default.

Re: Hunter Hunted in Windows 10
I successfully registered the codec, but it didn't change anything. But, it turns out I had missed something obvious. The executable was in compatibility mode for Windows 8. I don't know how it got that way since I didn't touch that, but I changed it to Windows 95 and the videos now play perfectly! So yeah. Hunter Hunted is Windows 10 compatible. The steps to get it working seem to be:
1.) Install with Collector's installer
2.) Install K-Lite Codec pack for the movies
3.) Make sure the C:\Windows\Sierra.ini is correct (see above)
4.) Set the executable (the new one that the installer creates) to Windows 95 compatibility.
