I gave up, just escaped out whenever I got the error.

I've copied the full cd's over, but it didn't help.

I am unable to replicate your problem. What version of the game do you have? You might try updating your graphics card drivers.

Re: GK3 installer issue

Post by Collector »

This is getting beyond what I am likely to be able do anything about. It had occurred that you might have a problem with the bink codec, so I had experimented with replacing the binkw32.dll from the game with another one that was newer, but this just made the game crash whenever playing a cutscene. One last thing that you might try -- search your Windows\System32 directory and move or rename binkw32.dll if it exists. It might be an incompatible version that is being used instead of the one in the game's folder, even though normally that one should take precedence over the one in the System32 folder.

It doesn't exist.

Like I said, I finished the game by just skipping the areas where I got the error. It's not ideal, but it suffices.

Have exactly same problem with almost all .bik videos on CD2/CD3 (Day-2/Day-3). Only skipping videos by pressing Escape key works... :( Really :(
Have XP SP3 w/all latest updates, mpeg2dmx.ax doesn't exist in my system

Re: GK3 installer issue

Post by Collector »

It appears to be a conflict with binkw32.dll and I suspect some other codec installed on your system. I have experimented with newer versions of the codec with GK3, but they crash the game on launch. Remember, the game is now over a decade old and it was several years ago when the the codec conflict was first noticed. The mpeg2dmx.ax codec isn't used much anymore, but several newer codecs have been introduced since.

You might try uninstalling any big codecs that you have installed. I have found that the K-Lite package covers most everything that I need, but have not had conflict troubles with it that way that I have with some of the other packages.

Oddly I have a similar issue with the GK3 BIK movies. I've re-copied most of the content, and it worked after that.
I'm sure it worked all perfectly fine up to the temple. Then I didn't play for a month, then I re-play (and discover you can walk from Homme Mort to Coume Sourde)...
(drum fill)
and the 2:5-10 PM film gives an unrecognized fatal error at exactly the same spot.
Copied that BIK file. It worked.
Comes at the 3:10AM-12PM movie. It gets stuck at the same point.

I've been wondering about this, because I also had such horrible trouble at Muppet Treasure Island. Do the files corrupt by themselves or something?

What order did you copy the files? I ask because there are some of the same files on each disc and there seems to issues with some of the copies.

You could, if it happens again, rename the old file and compare it with the new file.
(take an md5sum for example) Then you would know if the file got corrupt somehow.

QBix: that sounds like a great idea!

Collector: after using the installer, and the game jammed at Wilkes saying "Ive got some celebr...":
-I copied the 205PEND.BIK from Disk 2

-I copied the entire content of Disk 2
-That worked
-Game got stuck at Grace saying "No but I" in 3:10-12 opening movie
-Copied the entire contents of disk 3
-Played without a hitch up to the Temple, haven't continued from there (the bridge is going to be a lot of trouble with the little laptop pad)
-Started playing Black Dahlia and Voyeur II, didn't look back for a while
-Sarted playing again
-Got stuck at Wilkes saying "I've got some celebr..."
-Copied the 205PEND.BIK file
-Continued immediately
-It worked
-GK3 gets stuck at Grace saying "No but I" in 3:10-12 opening movie

That was yesterday. I made a new savegame after the point I left off, so I'll check if it has the same problem again. Or maybe it's just a matter of luck if it works yes or no.

Of course if files keep getting overwritten we don't know if what got fixed earlier gets broken again. We would need to be more methodical and keep track of what gets over written and check if things get rebroken. Kind of a pain to do it right, so I'll not expect you to go through all of that trouble. It might be that the only way to truly fix it would be to rename each of the files so nothing gets rewritten and hack the game to get it to look for the new names for its resources. That would be beyond my abilities.

Just had another hick-up, at another spot I've had a hick-up before (with Montreaux in the wine cellar).
Checked both a fresh day3-1.BIK and the supposedly corrupt file with md5sum. The code is exactly the same.

Out of curiosity, I noticed you are working on an experimental installer for GK3 -- is that to address some of these problems we've mentioned here?

I haven't done anything with the GK3 installer for sometime, now.
