Munt for MT-32 Sierra In-Game Music

The latest Munt builds are getting so close that I really want to share it. It is an absolute must for the SCI0 games. If you have not experienced these Sierra games with MT-32 music, you have not had the full Sierra experience. You will also need to get the MT-32 ROM files, MT32_CONTROL.ROM and MT32_PCM.ROM.

http://sierrahelp.com/download.php?file ... tSetup.exe

Copy the ROM files and the installer into the same folder and run MuntSetup.exe. Once installed,
  1. Change the default MIDI device on your system to "MT-32 Synth Emulator" from the Sound applet in the Control Panel in XP. If you have Vista or Win7 it will also install Putzlowitschs Vista MIDIMapper to allow you to change your default MIDI device to "MT-32 Synth Emulator". You will find it in your Control Panel (on Vista64 it will be in the 32-bit Control Panel).
  2. Run the game's INSTALL.EXE to select MT-32 for the game's sound driver or manually edit the game's RESOURCE.CFG to:

    Code: Select all

    soundDrv = MT32.DRV
That's all there is to it. Your game will now play with MT-32 music.

Setting the default MIDI device on your system to "MT-32 Synth Emulator" will allow the driver it will work with anything in Windows. To set only DOSBox to use Munt, set the system default device to what you want and start DOSBox. At DOSBox's prompt enter:

Code: Select all

mixer /listmidi
to find the device number of Munt. Once you know the device number you can get DOSBox to use Munt by adding the following to the dosbox.conf under the [midi] section:
you use to start the game.

Code: Select all

[midi]
midiconfig={number}
where {number} is the number you found from "mixer /listmidi" command. DOSBox started from this conf will then use Munt regardless of what the default MIDI device is set in Windows.

You owe it to your self to hear the way Sierra designed the fantastic music of our beloved games. Another great thing about Munt is that you can have the great sound of Sierra MT-32 music on your laptop without lugging any other hardware around with you. Tawm has been rediscovering these games with the music they were meant to have. I'll leave it to him to give his reaction.

As I suspected, I completely flaked. I got home and crashed out. (Been battling a cold for about a week, which is probably why I haven't been my normal chatty self on here lately either... I come to work, where I do most of my posting, and pretty much just put my head on my desk). :?

My brains currently too tired to think clearly - but I just installed it - and ran the install on SQ3 and changed it to Munt-32 sound... and um, WOW - the difference is NIGHT and DAY!
Seriously.

Either that or I just don't remember SQ3 sounding THIS good. I listened to the entire intro music. And the abduction. All of that. There's no way it sounded this good before.

EDIT: HOLY! The door just slid open (after the abduction/pick up whatever you want to call it) and Roger jumps down. Yeah. The sound is AMAZINGLY different.

What's a list of SCI0 Sierra games?!?!

Will your new installers be installing MUNT and selecting Munt-32 as the default audio?

Now you know what the Sierra games were supposed to sound like. :)

http://sierrahelp.com/SCI/Wiki/index.ph ... ction#SCI0 but mostly the EGA games.

Probably not because of the IP issues with the ROMs. This is the same reason that it has not been incorporated into DOSBox.

Okay - just went through and modified all those games to point to MUNT for audio. I may replay these with this new sound. Just listened to PQ2's opening - and it's a brand new experience.

I love the Conquest games' MT-32 tracks. QfG2 is great, too. Anyone that has not experienced these games with MT-32 has not fully experienced the Sierra games.

I am not kidding. I am going to be replaying this games. Is Longbow also SCI0? I don't think it was on the list?
Or do the later games also have MT-32 as well?

Great MT-32 tracks are not limited to just the SCI0 games. Sometime after GM support was added to the SCI1 games the MT-32 support started to be more of an after thought and so were nothing much better than GM. Longbow has a fantastic MT-32 track, one of my favorites. I am curious as to Andrea's reactions.

All the games with coloured cursors (save for KQ5) are SCI1.1 and were mostly composed for the SC-55/GM with very few exceptions (SQ4 and Laura Bow are two), anything else older than that with black and white cursors whether EGA or VGA were composed for the MT-32 and are all spectacular. Try out KQ4. It's quite a beautiful score. Really takes you away. KQ6, minus a couple piano sections, sounds really good on the MT-32 as well, even though it also has GM support.

No one else try this? You can't call yourself a Sierra fan and not have experienced the games with MT-32 music. It is a huge part of the experience.

Wasn't there a link to those Rom files earlier in the week?
