It reminds me of how so few know of the Funk Brothers, yet they have had more number 1 hits than more number-one hits than The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, and The Beach Boys combined.

Just checked: In the list of albums she's on, one of them is Freak Out!, Frank Zappa's debut album with the Mothers Of Invention. Carol Kaye is credited on that, under the Mothers Auxillary header. She played 12-string guitar on the album, not bass.
