So... just wondering (question re: WYSIWYG web editors)

I'm looking for a good, free WYSIWYG web editor. It needs to support XHTML, CSS and JavaScript, as well as be able to show me my code. I know this isn't much, and there's much more that I could be doing (PHP etc.), but this is all I need.

So far, I have downloaded (but not installed) Komodo Edit - but I was wondering if there's a better tool that I could use instead. Any ideas, recommendations etc.?

My knowledge regarding WYSIWYG is very dated, but I remember two that were (seemingly) the only contenders at the time - TinyMCE and FCKEditor. No idea how these have withstood the test of time.

I use a very dated version DreamWeaver because the code it generates very clean. Unfortunately, it is old enough to not display a lot of current CSS styles, but a tap of the F12 key previews it in a browser. Much of it I just do manually.

Hmm... I thought WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get?

Don't most web editors work that way - with an option to give you control of the XHTML/CSS/etc. code yourself?

TinyMCE seems to be what Wordpress has adopted.. I'm no expert on either, but I use it on my site (audiodane.dandk.org) and it's wysisyg.. I wouldn't say I'm in love with its capabilities, but it's built-in and works.. It's no MS Word, but it's something..

I wouldn't trust any Microsoft product to develop a website with, let alone MS Word. Does anyone remember... shudder... MS Frontpage?

I've been using Word since Windows 3.0 ... While it has it's moments and limitations, it's still pretty good.. What do you use?

Not WSIWYG, but Notepad ++. I also use an antiquated version of Dreamweaver.

NP++ is awesome, I use it too.. but sometimes you just need a wysiwyg.. And when you do, Word works pretty well. LibreOffice is coming along very nicely, it's pretty great, but the interface is still a bit clunky (it feels like Word 95), and not particularly responsive at times..

Using Word to make a website is a terrible idea nowadays. It wasn't even a very good idea a decade ago, although it was a bit more palatable considering the standards at the time.

As far as WYSIWYG editors are concerned, I've always liked Dreamweaver. I tried to use GoLive, but I just didn't like it as much.

Like Collector, my copy of Dreamweaver is quite old (it still says Macromedia on it, and Adobe acquired them in 2005), but it it gets the job done.

It's not like WYSIWYG editors are really all that necessary anymore. Content managers have taken their place, more or less.

Mine, too. The nasty thing about Word as an HTML editor is that it generates garbage code. Dreamweaver makes very clean, readable code. Pages it generates tend to look very much like what I would write from scratch. Here are two examples of the same content, one in Dreamweaver, the other in Word.

Yeesh... now I'm glad I never use MS Word to develop websites.

That is horrendously complicated for something that's supposed to be very simple!

Hmmm, funny-- when I think wysiwyg editors, I don't think about webpage creation! I'm thinking users manuals, reports, and the like. I'm beginning to feel like a fish out of water in this conversation now. I never intended to imply that I thought MSWord (or Libre Office) had its place in web content creation- my apologies!

I've been using BlueGriffon (bluegriffon.org) for tiny page creation for the past several years.. Here lately, I have migrated all my various sites (sites.google, knology.net, etc) to a custom host (audiodane.dandk.org), and I'm predominately using Wordpress now.. Been using it for about a year now. I do not claim that I believe WP is more efficient (likely it isn't), but seeing as I have to manage my time a lot better now than I used to, it makes it very easy and convenient to publish content..

I have always heard of wysiwyg in reference to HTML, not plain documents. For a word processor, I do prefer Word, especially since the docx format.

One of the great things about Dreamweaver is that it is a site management tool, with automatic link updating and the ability to check and fix links site wide. It is also quite easy to synchronize between local and remote sites. One thing that is a bit unfortunate about the old version that I have is that it does not always catch case changes when updating links. On *nix servers file names are case sensitive. It also does not always display all CSS styles, but makes it easy to link them. I generally use Notepad++ for CSS sheets. I haven't checked prices in a while, but since it is now part of the Adobe CS programs, I am sure it is much pricier than when it was Macromedia's.
