So, I've heard about the games about the Oregon Trail, and how difficult they were. Have you played them? Yes, I've heard the phrases "You have died of dysentery" and "You have died of snakebite", so I assume these games are pretty unforgiving. Is that right?
But now, apparently, Apple have signed a deal to create an "Oregon Trail" movie ... that will also be an "action comedy". Or a "musical comedy".
Yeesh ... that sounds inappropriate, to say the least. What do you think?
The Oregon Trail ... now a musical comedy???

In 1971, three student teachers in Minneapolis, MN created a little computer game about westward expansion in the United States. Over 50 years later, The Oregon Trail series has sold more than 65 million copies and has been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. But the original creators never made a penny off the game. Learn the story behind one of the most successful edutainment games of all time.

Not surprising that the game would get turned into something. I first played the game in school, believe it or not. And... every nightmare you've heard about the game, is absolutely true. It's horrible when you name the people on the voyage after yourself and family/friends, and along the trail (usually pretty early on), one or two of them almost always die. Always.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 5:59 am So, I've heard about the games about the Oregon Trail, and how difficult they were. Have you played them? I even bought the board/card game of it a few years back.

A horror-version was made called "The Organ Trail."

Re: The Oregon Trail ... now a musical comedy???
*Looks at the card game* Wow. And this game had been around since 1971??? Another wow.
So making it an "action comedy"? Or a musical comedy? Doesn't that sound just a tiny bit inappropriate? What are they going to do - someone dies of dysentery, and they make a big song and dance number?
Also, they've been making films out of just about every computer game. When will they make a King's Quest film? Or a Space Quest film? Or - god forbid - a Quest for Glory film? Sierra games are just as good as any other game, dammit!
And what will they do when they run out of games? Imagine - coming soon from Hollywood ... DOS 3.1 - A HORROR FILM!!! Mwahahaha!
Do you think it'll work? Would you go and see a film about DOS programmers trying to write the TSR files into config.sys in the correct order ... and they get it wrong ... and DOS doesn't work?

The fact that you have never played the game, but you get the whole "you died of dysentery" - yes, I can easily see it being a comedy, especially for those who have played the computer game.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 6:05 pm So making it an "action comedy"? If it falls under Microsoft, who knows. Anything is possible.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 6:05 pm Also, they've been making films out of just about every computer game. Well we taught Rath here about "You have died of dysentery" in this classic SHP moment.
I only played Oregon Trail once - and won. But one of my party of 5 didn't make it. It's unforgiving in the sense that, one of the first things you do, is decide when you leave the east, and if you pick the wrong time you've already lost.

There's a new script around: PHANTASMAGORIA - A Puzzle Of Flesh! Check the Script Party topic in the Bard's Forum!
