Re: Laura Bow Fans?
*totally raises hand*
Well, I love the first Laura Bow game. I love the second - but the first one was just incredible. The different endings depending on what you do. The way you can spy on people. The characters were VERY fun. The first one, to me anyway, is definitely better than the second by miles. And I loved the second one - so that should say how much I REALLY loved the first one. I just thought it was so well done.

I didn't like the first Laura Bow game, mainly because of the characters! I found them too stereotypical to really be interesting, and this totally spoiled my enjoyment of the game
I have the second game, and I'm really looking forward to it, also because I think that a museum is a much more interesting setting for a sleuth game!

See, to me the characters were almost a parody... while the game was somewhat serious - it had it's fair share of comedic moments. So to me, the characters were MEANT to be super stereotypical. (Like the maid and how she treats him... I mean, how overly obvious can it be? The mysterious butler! It was all there!)AndreaDraco83 wrote: I didn't like the first Laura Bow game, mainly because of the characters! The muesum is an interesting setting. And I do like how she became more respected (to some degree) at the beginning of the game. So I did like that - but for me the lack of real characteristic fun is where it went down hill for me in the second game.
Ironically, it was the first Laura Bow game that inspired me to make a quick text adventure game (only for PC/DOS) - called Final Soul.

I think this is exactly what turned me down in the game: I was expecting a serious drama-mystery, and complex, compelling characters (Jane Jensen really spoiled me ). Though, I really liked the ending, when it's totally up to you to figure out what the hell happened in the mansion.Tawmis wrote: See, to me the characters were almost a parody... while the game was somewhat serious - it had it's fair share of comedic moments. I've just downloaded it!Tawmis wrote: Ironically, it was the first Laura Bow game that inspired me to make a quick text adventure game (only for PC/DOS) - called Final Soul.
EDIT: the game freezes when it asks me if I want to see the introduction. No matter what I type, nothing happens...

Jane Jensen did really ruin all other games for you?AndreaDraco83 wrote: I think this is exactly what turned me down in the game: I was expecting a serious drama-mystery, and complex, compelling characters (Jane Jensen really spoiled me ). DOh! That's right. Okay - so back when I programmed it the POKE command would automatically turn on CAPS. The game only works when CAPS is on. So "u game" won't work - has to be "U GAME" and such. So for the intro has to be Y or N not y or n. The POKE command doesn't work on newer systems. And really if you're actually going to give it a whirl (dear gawd!) - just know I was younger, all the characters are based off friends, and it's all very turn based. So you will "see" people walk in and out of the rooms. And make sure you do the "?" when you start the game so you see all the commands (to make my life easier rather then "use" I just use the U command)...AndreaDraco83 wrote:I've just downloaded it!Tawmis wrote: Ironically, it was the first Laura Bow game that inspired me to make a quick text adventure game (only for PC/DOS) - called Final Soul.

No But she surely set a high standard bar. Her games are my most loved ones, and I think it's inevitable to compare other games to hers.Tawmis wrote: Jane Jensen did really ruin all other games for you?
That said, in all art forms the author's vision, his/her recognizable hand/pen/look, is pretty important to me: I prefer Authors over mere artisans, Lynch - to cite my favorite filmmaker as an example - over any Michal Bay
OK. I'll do it that way!Tawmis wrote: DOh! That's right. Okay - so back when I programmed it the POKE command would automatically turn on CAPS. The game only works when CAPS is on. So "u game" won't work - has to be "U GAME" and such. So for the intro has to be Y or N not y or n.

Re: Laura Bow Fans?
I had always hoped for a Laura Bow 3, personally. I actually really enjoyed the character. (Somewhere else around here - maybe in the KQ4 thread? - I mentioned enjoying strong female characters!) Just because the market is usually so male driven. So it's a breath of fresh air.

Thanks Collector! I'm having a great time on this forum!Collector wrote:Hey Andrea, I noticed that you raised your rank to "Sierra Lover". Congrats.
I know that this isn't the right place, so I only wanted to say that you're wanted in the Non-Sierra games thread to answer a question!Tawmis wrote: (Somewhere else around here - maybe in the KQ4 thread? - I mentioned enjoying strong female characters!)

Re: Laura Bow Fans?
LB2 has a special place for me because it was one of the first Sierra games I've played. The only thing I didn't like in LB1 was that it didn't take much for the game to progress. LB2's puzzles were more complex and took a lot longer to figure out.
Plus, the museum setting and graphics were more appealing.. and scary to me.

If a third game ever got made, maybe they could call it "Conquests of the Laura Bow."

*groan*
I love the Laura Bow series. Not only is the 1920s setting completely cool, but I love a good mystery. I love the house in the first one and the museum in the second one. They were both appropriate for the mystery to take place.
Perhaps this is perverse, but I got bored one day when I was stuck in LB1 and I decided to find out how many ways Laura could die. There are a number of them, each with amusing death messages. Ah death messages. Those were the days.

Re: Laura Bow Fans?
If you sit through the credits of LB2, it shows you all the ways you can die.
I found that entertaining, especially since I recognized several from my own stupidity.
