Are there any Laura Bow fans here? Let us know.
This time we don't agree, TawmisTawmis wrote:And I loved the second one - so that should say how much I REALLY loved the first one. I just thought it was so well done.
See, to me the characters were almost a parody... while the game was somewhat serious - it had it's fair share of comedic moments. So to me, the characters were MEANT to be super stereotypical. (Like the maid and how she treats him... I mean, how overly obvious can it be? The mysterious butler! It was all there!)AndreaDraco83 wrote: I didn't like the first Laura Bow game, mainly because of the characters! I found them too stereotypical to really be interesting, and this totally spoiled my enjoyment of the game

I think this is exactly what turned me down in the game: I was expecting a serious drama-mystery, and complex, compelling characters (Jane Jensen really spoiled me ). Though, I really liked the ending, when it's totally up to you to figure out what the hell happened in the mansion.Tawmis wrote: See, to me the characters were almost a parody... while the game was somewhat serious - it had it's fair share of comedic moments. I've just downloaded it!Tawmis wrote: Ironically, it was the first Laura Bow game that inspired me to make a quick text adventure game (only for PC/DOS) - called Final Soul.
Jane Jensen did really ruin all other games for you?AndreaDraco83 wrote: I think this is exactly what turned me down in the game: I was expecting a serious drama-mystery, and complex, compelling characters (Jane Jensen really spoiled me ). DOh! That's right. Okay - so back when I programmed it the POKE command would automatically turn on CAPS. The game only works when CAPS is on. So "u game" won't work - has to be "U GAME" and such. So for the intro has to be Y or N not y or n. The POKE command doesn't work on newer systems. And really if you're actually going to give it a whirl (dear gawd!) - just know I was younger, all the characters are based off friends, and it's all very turn based. So you will "see" people walk in and out of the rooms. And make sure you do the "?" when you start the game so you see all the commands (to make my life easier rather then "use" I just use the U command)...AndreaDraco83 wrote:I've just downloaded it!Tawmis wrote: Ironically, it was the first Laura Bow game that inspired me to make a quick text adventure game (only for PC/DOS) - called Final Soul.
EDIT: the game freezes when it asks me if I want to see the introduction. No matter what I type, nothing happens...
No But she surely set a high standard bar. Her games are my most loved ones, and I think it's inevitable to compare other games to hers.Tawmis wrote: Jane Jensen did really ruin all other games for you?
OK. I'll do it that way!Tawmis wrote: DOh! That's right. Okay - so back when I programmed it the POKE command would automatically turn on CAPS. The game only works when CAPS is on. So "u game" won't work - has to be "U GAME" and such. So for the intro has to be Y or N not y or n.
I can forgive youTawmis wrote:I am no Jane Jensen!
Thanks Collector! I'm having a great time on this forum!Collector wrote:Hey Andrea, I noticed that you raised your rank to "Sierra Lover". Congrats.
I know that this isn't the right place, so I only wanted to say that you're wanted in the Non-Sierra games thread to answer a question!Tawmis wrote: (Somewhere else around here - maybe in the KQ4 thread? - I mentioned enjoying strong female characters!)
