Why are there so many cheap-o Z-rated films? :-\

I'm just wondering. The whole concept of the "Sharknado" film was bad enough before I learned that there were six of them. But even that wasn't enough, apparently.

In addition to those, somebody made a "Stonado" film (where large rocks get caught in a tornado and spat out at people), a "Clownado" film (where a tornado transports scary clowns around?), a "Monsternado" film (where prehistoric monsters ... somehow ... get transported to the USA from the Bermuda Triangle, 'cos why not) ...

... and finally, the crowning turd in this entire crap-bucket: "Catnado". Because why not.

*Sigh* Does anybody even watch this?

I think they are trying to cash in on the whole "so-bad-it's-good" market. Films like "Plan 9 From Outer Space" or "Manos, the Hand of Fate". The problem is that what makes these films entertaining is that they are colossal failures, largely due to a lack of experience of the film makers and a lack of self-awareness to recognize that what they made is terrible. And this is what the makers of Sharknado fail to understand. When you deliberately try to make a bad movie, you just end up with a bad movie. These must do well enough because they keep making them, but I don't get it either.

I mean, to be fair, any slasher movie is the same.

First Friday the 13th, fine, interesting and scary. First Nightmare on Elm Street, same - fine, scary. First Halloween, same, fine scary.

Now each of those has like 5+ movies to them.

And some are absolutely ridiculous (Jason goes to Hell, Jason X in outer space).

But you know who has watched every Friday the 13th movie? Some, multiple times? Me. (Not Jason goes to Hell or Jason X, those were bad enough with just one viewing).

So there's definitely a market out there for everything. As NBS said, Sharknado was so bad, that it became a "cult classic" almost instantly, so everyone else jumped on it.

Catnado, however, (I've not looked) almost seems like a parody of a bad movie (in my head).

Hey! I never said anything against "slasher" movies. I also enjoyed the first "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie, and I really don't like horror.

As for "Catnado" ... nope, they play it straight. From IMDB, here is the plot line:

The world faces a horrific onslaught of tornadoes, each unleashing spiraling hordes of enraged and deadly cats upon humanity. As chaos reigns, a disparate group of individuals have one mission: to stop this feline fury. But against such odds, and with only one life to spare per person, their battle becomes a cat-astrophic struggle to weather the storm. And when the fur flies it will be a meow-ssacre.

So ... what. The. Hell?

Even so, this pales in comparison to some of the other titles I saw on IMDB that are like this. "Sharks of the Corn" (parody of "Children of the Corn", I assume). "Shark Exorcist". "Cocaine Crabs from Outer Space". "Sharkula" (a vampire shark??)

Some of these cross the border of ridicule and sound completely inane ... like "Sharkenstein". "Pandasaurus". "Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf" (a shark-octopus vs. a whale-werewolf???) And possibly the most inane ... "Killer Sofa".

To be honest, these sound like the televisual equivalent of eating a late-night kebab at 3am, after getting absolutely falling-down-hammered in the last pub to shut in a sketchy part of town. You know you shouldn't, but you're drunk, and it sounds like a good idea at the time.

And then, later, you wake up and think "What the hell did I do last night?"
