KQ7 - Brand New Patch Files for Art Fixes

Post by Semi-Happy Partygoer »

Recently, I began creating new patches for KQ7, correcting a number of minor art issues and oversights which were somehow missed by Sierra. The following is a list of what I've done so far, followed by a link. Just place them in your patch or main game folder and you'll be good to go.

The more I've searched, the more minor discrepancies I've discovered, though some will take longer to correct. I shall update this thread once I've made more progress. In the meantime, these fixes cover many of the more noticeable errors.

Please note I've only tested these with version 2.00b (the only DOS version, and the one available through Collector's SHP installer). Unless otherwise noted, I cannot guarantee all will work with earlier versions as of yet.

Feel free to let me know if you encounter any issues.

PART ONE:
836.v56 - Rosella walking sprite. Fixed palette issues and facial anomalies in standing frames.
1255.v56 - Valanice acquiring and tasting salt water from pool. Fixed location of shadow color in palette index - no longer appears blue.
1256.v56 - Statue Bowl. Fixed coordinates for glowing effect when creating fresh water. Animation no longer off-centre.
2236.v56 - Titania in bad ending. Fixed one frame with incorrect shadow color.
2241.v56 - Rosella walking sprite used in volcano control room. Fixed same issues as above.
3100.v56 - Feldspar. Fixed animation coordinates and recolored aberrant red pixel to match other frames.
3209.v56 - Lady Ceres as Tree. This restores the original background art style branch to the tree, which was featured in the resources but unused. Instead, the first cel-animated loop for the transformation sequence was used in all instances. This revision makes the branch less conspicuous and helps it blend in more naturally.
3264.v56 - Cornucopia Maiden. Corrected positioning of cornucopia filling animation.
4316.v56 - Shrunken Heads. Corrected positioning of shrunken heads talking animation.
5326.v56 - Falderal badger. Fixed color of eyelids while talking.
5328.v56 - Falderal badger. Fixed color of eyelids while talking.
6051.v56 - Valanice entering crystal ball. Fixed location of shadow color in palette index - no longer appears blue.
6065.v56 - Lachesis. Thread no longer appears black while talking but proper yellow color like the rest of her frames.
20554.v56 - Forging troll. Restores missing lip-sync frames before he passes out from sulfur smoke. NOTE: not required for earlier versions of the game, just 2.00b.
30902.v56 - Rosella talking in Black Cloak. Adjusted coordinates of talking facial animations for several loops.

Will definitely have to check this out.
Ironically, been replaying KQ for my channel - because when I originally started the channel, I was tampering around with video settings and because original it's so small 320x200 - when I tried to make them all 1080p they came out horrid.
So now I know how to do it and not make it horrible.
So while the videos render (for example, just replayed KQ1EGA while GK2 was rendering) I have been revisiting KQ.

No, FotoSCIhop. SCI Companion does allow the view files to be edited, but doesn’t save them in a format the game can read. Must be due to limited SCI32 compatibility.

I don't know what's going on. I asked a question here two days ago ... and it disappeared. I asked it again yesterday ... and again it disappeared.

Suddenly I'm thinking of this song.

Anyway, I wanted to ask: I already have KQ7, but haven't played it yet. (I wanted to finish KQ5 and KQ6 first, which I did). :D So, should I:

a) go ahead and play KQ7;
OR
b) wait for SHP's patch? :) It sounds like it changes quite a few things, so if it eliminates loads of bugs, it might make sense to wait.

Does anyone know?

It's mostly fixing animations. The way it works is it overwrites existing files.
The above already fixes some of those animations.
SHP can answer more.

I have a HUGE update for this on the way, but in the meantime, here’s something partially related.

As this project has involved a lot of time perusing the resource files of various versions, looking for things to fix, I’ve also stumbled upon a number of cut pictures and animations. Akril’s website already detailed many of these, but I recently sent her my findings and she’s updated the KQ7 pages. So have a look at some more deleted artwork if you like.

UPDATE:

For the past few years, I have been creating new patches for KQ7, correcting a number of minor art issues and oversights which were somehow missed by Sierra (probably due to tight deadlines). The following is a list of what I've done so far. Just place them in your patch or main game folder and you'll be good to go.
The more I've searched, the more minor discrepancies I've discovered, though some will take longer to correct. I shall update this project further once I've made more progress. In the meantime, these fixes cover many of the more noticeable errors.

Please note I've primarily tested these with version 2.00b (the only DOS version, and the one available through Collector's SHP installer). Unless otherwise noted, I cannot guarantee all will work with earlier versions as of yet. Feel free to let me know if you encounter any issues.

INVENTORY ITEMS: A number of the 3D-rendered inventory item closeups didn’t have every frame render correctly, resulting in conspicuous black patches and missing details. To the best of my ability, I have corrected what I have spotted so far, ranging from filling in a few blank pixels to more involved copying, pasting and re-painting (the china bird’s vanishing legs and the missing parts of the horseman’s medal were among the most egregious). The corrected files for the inventory closeups are as follows:

200.v56 – Golden Comb
205.v56 – Turquoise puzzle piece (down arrow)
207.v56 – Basket
219.v56 – Ear of Corn
222.v56 – Turquoise Shape
230.v56 – Shield Spike
242.v56 – China Bird
243.v56 – Mask
247.v56 – Magic Statuette
261.v56 – Woolen Stocking
265.v56 – Were Beast Salve
272.v56 – Femur Bone
273.v56 – Horseman’s Medal
275.v56 – Skull
281.v56 – Dreamcatcher with Nightmare

SPRITE VIEWS:
836.v56 - Rosella walking sprite. Fixed palette issues and facial anomalies in standing frames.
911.v56 – Valanice Death Closeup. Removed white background patches under her ear.
912.v56 – Rosella Death Closeup. Fixed earing color and straightened disjointed collar, corrected lipsync.
913.v56 – Troll Rosella Death Closeup. Removed out of place purple pixels and cleaned up lipsync animations.
950.v56 – Menu Bar. Fixed a few missing pixels surrounded black middle section and corrected golden pattern arrangement at the top.
1205.v56 – Valanice blowing hunting horn. Fixed frame where her hair color changed.
1210.v56 – Rosella talking to Roo Rat. Fixed earring color and added in missing trim color for a few frames.
(NOT compatible with earlier versions!)
2241.v56 - Rosella walking sprite used in volcano control room. Fixed same issues as above.
2350.v56 – Volcano Control Room Door. Adjusted Door Eyebrow Coordinates, added missing pixels.
2352.v56 – Rosella Acquiring Flower in Underground. Added missing shadow to one frame and fixed minor pixel oversights.
2354.v56 – Rosella Blasted Backwards. Fixed frames with incorrect colors.
3252.v56 – Flowers dripping nectar. Fixed coordinates so now centered properly.
3264.v56 - Cornucopia Maiden. Corrected positioning of cornucopia filling animation.
4054.v56 – Gravedigger Digging. Fixed minor palette inconsistencies.
4061.v56 – Rosella in Elevator. Fixed bodice color and other palette issues.
4071.v56 – Gravedigger Shovel Closeup. Fixed numerous palette inconsistencies.
4108.v56 – Rosella knocking on Dr. Cadaver’s door while in black cloak. Fixed one loop to match palette of other cloak views (several loops in this view are unused so I didn’t touch them).
4112.v56 – Rosella putting on black cloak. Fixed bodice color and other minor palette issues.
4200.v56 – Mr. Nibbler. Fixed loops showing Mr. Nibbler; his arms no longer disappear when talking.
4210.v56 – Dr. Cadaver giving Rosella defoliant. Fixed loops where cloak palette didn’t match other cloak views.
4211.v56 – Dr. Cadaver. Fixed minor errors.
4301.v56 – Treehouse Elevator (Rosella). Corrected some miscolored pixels.
4312.v56 – Treehouse Elevator (Valanice). Corrected some miscolored pixels and removed unnecessary shadow (there was no shadow in the Rosella version, and it wasn’t necessary here as there’s no solid ground under the elevator.)
4316.v56 - Shrunken Heads. Corrected positioning of shrunken heads talking animation.
4319.v56 – Deadfall. Fixed some incorrectly colored pixels.
4478.v56 – Rosella being zapped by Malicia, multiple angles. Corrected bodice color.
4502.v56 – Rosella beneath Deadfall. Fixed some incorrect transparencies and other palette issues.
4557.v56 – Rosella sprays 3-Headed Plant with Defoliant. Fixed palette to match other cloak views.
4559.v56 – Rosella throws foot in bag to plant. Fixed palette to match other cloak views.
4560.v56 – Rosella eaten by plant while getting flower. Corrected pixel and palette issues.
4561.v56 – Rosella eaten by plant while walking too close. Corrected pixel and palette issues.
4568.v56 – Rosella being zapped by Malicia in black cloak, multiple angles. Fixed palette discrepancies.
4601.v56 – Cuddles closeup. Fixed miscolored eye to match the other.
4701.v56 – Rosella and Otar in Coffin, Part 1. Corrected bodice color and other miscolored pixels.
4702.v56 – Rosella and Otar in Coffin, Part 2. Fixed same issues as above.
4703.v56 – Rosella and Otar in Coffin, Part 3. Fixed same issues as above.
4704.v56 – Rosella and Otar in Coffin, Part 4. Fixed same issues as above.
5203.v56 – Powder Room Mirrors, Valanice Reflections. Made a few color adjustments.
5207.v56 – Rosella polishing plaque. Colored in stocking, made palette adjustments to Rosella's dress, choker and eyes.
5210.v56 – Rosella chiseling golden grape. Corrected bodice color and filled in grape so no longer transparent.
5220.v56 – Powder Room Mirrors, Rosella Reflections. Rosella's fun-house mirror animations were clearly redrawn from Valanice's cels, and some details that appear on Valanice's dress but not Rosella's (like the two tassels) remained. These have now been removed and her collar changed to white, plus her choker and earrings have been modified to better match her other sprites.
5326.v56 - Falderal badger. Fixed color of eyelids while talking in appropriate loop.
5328.v56 - Falderal badger. Fixed color of eyelids while talking in appropriate loop.
6051.v56 - Valanice entering gazing ball. Fixed location of shadow color in palette index - no longer appears blue.
6065.v56 - Lachesis. Thread no longer appears black while talking but proper yellow color like the rest of her frames.
8315.v56 – Valanice talking with arms crossed. Fixed frames where her hair changed color.
20512.v56 – Oppi Goldsworth. Changed color of hair and eyes to match other views.
20554.v56 - Forging troll. Restores missing lipsync frames before he passes out from sulfur smoke. NOTE: NOT required for earlier versions of the game, just 2.00b.
24506.v56 – Malicia and Rosella in Underground. Fixed color of windup rat in one loop.
30902.v56 - Rosella talking in Black Cloak. Adjusted coordinates of talking facial animations for several loops.
40525.v56 – Gravedigger Digging. Changed black pixels to brown for flying dirt.
43590.v56 – Rosella Deadfall Death. Corrected palette to match other views and various pixel anomalies.
43591.v56 – Valanice Deadfall Death. Corrected bone colors and pixel anomalies.
43592.v56 – Rosella Deadfall Death, Black Cloak. Corrected palette and pixel anomalies. (This animation uses Valanice’s death as its base, and sometimes her palette colors appeared instead of Rosella’s. I have fixed this, especially in regards to hair color.)

PIC RESOURCE PATCHES: A number of the background art files for KQ7 were scanned sightly off-centre, occasionally resulting in sections of blank canvas appearing at the edges. As well, a few files had pixels that were incorrectly transparent, rendering as black dots in-game. To the best of my ability, I have fixed the problems I have spotted so far. The files are as follows:

2350.p56 - Volcano Corridor. Fixed layering over door, modified a few off pixels. (NOTE: Might only be needed if playing via ScummVM)
2500.p56 - Troll Kitchen. Filled in white canvas in upper right corner.
3100.p56 - Feldspar. Removed out of place black pixels due to transparency value.
4000.p56 - Tsepish House. Removed out of place black pixels due to transparency value.
4050.p56 - Ooga Booga Elevator. Removed out of place black pixel due to transparency value.
4101.p56 - Tsepish Tomb. Filled in white canvas in lower left corner, fixed black pixels around gravestone.
4102.p56 - Dr. Cadaver's House. Fixed a few off pixels.
4400.p56 - Graveyard. Fixed transparency cutouts behind tree, which were missed. Sky between branches no longer appears over characters.
4551.p56 - Swamp West. Filled in blank canvas between tree branches, fixed transparency pixels on right-side tree.
4700.p56 - Coffin Interior. Removed black canvas artifacts.
5000.p56 - Faux Shop. Painted in white canvas on right side of screen.
5200.p56 - Powder Room. Painted in white canvas on upper and lower right sides of screen.
5211.p56 - Tarnished Plaque. Cleaned up using assets from unused 5212.
5301.p56 - Falderal West. Cleaned up using assets from original 5300.
5302.p56 - Falderal East. Fixed yellow building to even out roof features.
6000.p56 - Mountain of Winds. Filled in white canvas on upper right side of screen.
6015.p56 - Valanice and Levanter Close-Up. Colored in random black pixels.
6020.p56 - Oberon, Titania and Valanice Close-Up. Colored in random black pixels.
6300.p56 - Etheria Meadow. Removed out of place black pixel due to transparency value.
6600.p56 - Mountain of Winds long shot. Fixed canvas blemishes (unused, only needed for following split screens which are combined by engine).
6601.p56 - Mountain of Winds long shot TOP - Fixed canvas blemishes and adjusted coordinates - mountain no longer off-centre.
6602.p56 - Mountain of Winds long shot BOTTOM - Fixed canvas blemishes.

My pleasure :)
Thank you for saving it. Looks great.

I’ve begun work on even more. Spent a few hours today cleaning up Valanice’s walking sprite, which I discovered was riddled with odd purple pixels that, admittedly, are hard to spot when she’s in motion. But if I’m doing this, I want to be thorough.
