Woot. Got my ElfQuest RPG kickstarter.

Post by Tawmis »

Got it, just to get it. Which probably didn't need, because ...

1. I have previous (older versions) and...
2. No one I know would play the ElfQuest RPG.

Regardless, the box and contents are beautifully done.

Why not? *curious* I think your friends at work play D&D, right? Why not Elf Quest? :)

Art usually is. That's the point of art. :)

A few reasons.
None of them have ever read the ElfQuest comics, so unfamiliar with the lore of ElfQuest.
Second, ElfQuest is a very different than the D&D system. Very different. So they'd need to learn a new gaming system.
In the end, they'd be like, "Why play ElfQuest if we already have an existing D&D campaign going?" :D

This was an issue for a few players. In another game I run, two players had to leave because their Church heard they were playing D&D and basically gave them the choice, but to make their church happy, they left the game. (Don't get me started... because there's demons, magic, and gods in D&D... and to be clear, I told the players, there will be no demons, no possession, but there is magic and there is gods...)

So then I asked if they'd play a 5e version of Star Wars that some fans made - no demons, no gods, no religion (OK, other than the Jedi Order, but that's more of an order than it is a religion)... and they agreed... but two of my other players from that game are NOT fans of Star Wars at all, and were like, "So we're dropping this existing Dragonlance game?"

So to keep everyone happy - I now run a Dragonlance game (minus those two players who left for religious reasons) and the Star Wars game (which includes the religious people, plus the non two Star Wars fans, because everyone who plays in the game is their family...)

No necessarily. Art is very much based on someone's taste.

I get that, for example, Picasso is as famous as he is, but I don't like his art style.

There's plenty of art in comic books these days, that I despise. (Which has made it easy leaving that hobby far behind me) :D

Oh, gods. I just love it when folks who know nothing about a subject -- D&D, politics, religion, whatever -- decide that it's their business to interfere in other people's lives and ostracize them just because they enjoy something that the original folks hate.

Do they get a kick out of gatekeeping like that? Does it give them a nice inner glow of holier-than-thou-ism? :? After the "Satanic Panic" of the 80s, I thought we as a species were over that. But apparently not.

Oh, well. Personally, I agree with C. S. Lewis when he said: "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." In other words, true maturity is not being afraid to enjoy so-called 'childish' things, like fairy tales or fairy stories ... or games, including D&D. :)

And I'm sorry, I hope I'm not coming across as preachy myself!

Fair enough. I probably phrased that badly. *blush* Art, in the service of marketing (and especially in a game), is usually beautifully done. :)

It's very different to world-famous art by Picasso or Degas or Da Vinci or someone. :D

I don't particularly enjoy the art used nowadays in Looney Tunes cartoons. It's just not the same as "classic" Looney Tunes. Compare and contrast the new versions (from wikipedia and iMDB):

... With the "classic" one (also from wikipedia):

The "new" versions look "wacky" for the sake of "wacky". The classic version looks refined and suave. There's no contest. :( So I'm confused why they drew him that way. :?

Also, no-one can replace Mel Blanc. NO-ONE. :D

Yeah, the problem with the Church Elders, or whatever they're called - they're all older people. So they were around during the 80s "Satanic Panic" where Heavy Metal and Dungeons & Dragons were at the root of all evil.

And so, obviously, many of those people, still believe such things.

Because, let's face it (whether it was religious or even otherwise) - if you don't like something, you probably will never try it to see if you would like it. So I, at the very least - understand why they still believe D&D is the Devil, because their religion told them it was, and to even try it, is to welcome that evil into your home, or soul, or whatever.

It is, what it is.

No, because, those heavily rooted in religion, still need a devil to point at.
