King's Quest 8: Mask of Eternity on Windows 10.

I have all the King's Quest games. The King's Quest 8 that i have is Original in 1 CD, with subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese (Brazilian Version). The game doesn't work on Windows 10. I downloaded a patch in The Sierra Help Pages (http://sierrahelp.com), the name of the installation file is "kqmasksetup.exe". It worked great on Windows 10. The only problem is that sometimes the game freezes. I tried to run as administrator, with compatibility mode with Windows 98 / Windows Me. I think it reduced the freezes, but didn't solve the problem. Even so, the game is playable and i completed it. Just had to save often. Just one small problem with the Brazilian Version. I had little problems with a few words in the subtitles. Examples:

"Não" word is showed as "N o".

Other examples:

Trovão = Trov o

Dimensão = Dimens o

So, the "ã" is not showing in the subtitles. But there is no big deal with that in my opinion. Maybe in the future i will get the GOG Version to test it. So, does anybody have a solution to the freezing problems with the game using this patch?

I have not looked at that installer for quite some time. I cannot guess about its compatibility with Win11. The lack of letters with diacritics is probably from included patch (MoE13fg) files intended for the US release. I do believe that freezes were one of the issues that that patch was supposed to help. I don't know if there were international versions of that patch or not. If there was and you can find it, you could try to install itand see if it helps.

Thanks for the reply. I have this patch and used in my old computer with Windows XP 32 bits "KQMoE(MoE13fg).exe" and i didn't had problems with the subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese. I think this patch is universal. Maybe we need a new patch to solve this problem with the subtitles and the freezing bug as well.

King's Quest 8 from GOG won't work.
I got King's Quest 7+8 from GOG. King's Quest 7 is working fine, but 8 is not. King's Quest 8 won't even start. I have readed a lot of messages on GOG forum, and i noticed that a lot of people had problems with this game. I tried a few solutions, but nothing works. Does anybody knows how to make this game work using Windows 10? The Original CD Version of this game that i have work using a patch from The Sierra Help Pages, but sometimes the game freezes, but it's playable at least.

I found a solution to play King's Quest 8 GOG Version. In the game directory, delete this file:
main.kq
Now try to run the game. It will work. I just found new problems after that. In the top of the screen instead of "King's Quest Mask of Eternity" you will see strange symbols. If you try the option "Replay Intro", the game will crash. Deleting the file main.kq and running the game will play the intro in the beginning of the game again. Also, you will have to play in 640 X 480. If you choose 800 X 600 the game will crash. When you quit the game, the Windows screen will be bugged, and you will have to log out of Windows to fix this. I had the same problems when i installed the original game using The Sierra Help Pages patch, except the error in the top of the screen in the main menu. I solved this problems with The Sierra Help Pages patch selecting the option to install "Zeckensack's Glide Wrapper". I downloaded this program and installed on Windows 10, but didn't solve the problems in the GOG Version of the game. Well, at least now the GOG Version is playable. I will try to finish the game later.

More problems fixed. I tried to use Nicode kq8fix.exe before, with no effect. But after i deleted the file main.kq and the game became playable, i decided to try again. kq8fix.exe fixed more things. Now in the main menu, the option "Replay Intro" works with no crash, and you can watch the intro movie. Now the game will work in 800 X 600 screen resolution. No more screen problems in Windows when you quit the game. Only one problem remained, the strange symbols in the top of the screen in the main menu. After you delete the file main.kq, when you lauch the program, the game will create a new main.kq file. But looks like the game is creating a damaged file. Maybe if somebody can give me a copy of the English Version of the file main.kq this will fix the problem. One more thing. I tried Nicode's fix in the Original Brazilian Version of the game. The patch removed the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles in the intro. So, i will only use this patch in the GOG Version of the game. Now all i need to do is complete the game to test it.

I fixed the problem with the strange symbols in the top of the screen in the main menu of the game. This file was missing:
starttxt.txt
Now all problems have been fixed.

I unistalled the game King's Quest 8 from GOG and reinstalled. I just wanted to check if the patch really fix the game. This time, deleting the file main.kq didn't work. I had to put the main.kq that was installed using the installer from The Sierra Help Pages. Now it worked. After the game is working, you can delete main.kq, after playing the game the file will be created again. I finished King's Quest 8 from GOG. The game worked fine. It just crashed two times during the game. But it's working fine now. Game approved.
