SQ6 installer problem

In Space No One Can Hear You Clean, er, Scream. But if you post in this forum about Space Quest - someone's sure to hear you. I think. Try it, anyway!

SQ6 installer problem

Post by Tinuviel »

Hi again Collector.

I've found your installers helpful, but I'm having another problem, this time with the SQ6 installer. I'm getting the error "Error 28: can't find audio driver DACBLAST.DRV" and then the program asks me to run install again.

I noticed during the install that some files fail to copy (it doesn't tell me what files, I just see "copy failed" during the installation.

Let me know if you need more information.

Hi, Tin. Usually, the reason the the installers get some "Copy failed" errors is because of different versions of the games that don't have exactly the same file listing or that the disc has some unreadable files on it. What version number do you have? Is the surface of the CD in good shape and the disc readable? Is DACBLAST.DRV on your CD and can it be copied?

If it is because of a different version, I would like to get it working to be sure it has the widest possible compatibility with all versions. If there were a number of files that didn't copy, I could give you a special build of the installer that will allow you to create a log.

I've got the 1995 release -- it isn't a collection, just SQ6.

The CD itself is clean -- no scratches, no fingerprints (I'm kinda anal about my cds, for whatever reason.)

I copied the file over to the base SQ6 directory, and then tried to run it again and ... nothing. Did not give me an error message this time, it started up in DOSBox then closed itself.

What does the VERSION file say (open it in Notepad)? if you remove the "exit" line in the dosbox.conf file, DOSBox won't close when the game exits so you can see what error it is giving you.

Version 1.11.

I'm not seeing a config file, other than the shortcut to "configuration" from the start menu. And in that, I do not find an "exit" line (or since I'm not programmer-inclined, I probably don't recognize it if it is there.)

The dosbox.conf is in the installed folder. The exit line will be the very bottom. I used version 1.0 to make the installer, there may be differences between the two version that is causing the failure. I do have 1.11 in my duplicates, so I'll have a look to see if there are differences.

Don't worry too much about it. I've used the speed bug fix before, I should be able to get it running with that.

Hi you two!

And spare me please, DP. ACG does more than enough bad puns for me to handle.

You may not be following this tread anymore, Tin, but I have fixed the installer to be compatible with your version. In your version some of the files on the CD were placed in an "INSTALL" folder, where on version 1.0 those same files are in the base of the CD, so the installer could not find those files.

So will the installer work with both versions?

Just asking.

Yes. Whenever someone reports that one of the SHP installers didn't work for them, usually it is because they have a different version. If I can get enough information about the other version I add support for that version to the same installer. Usually all that is necessary is to add a version detection routine with a conditional script to install the files and or configuration for the version detected. Dot has helped out with this for several installers.

Anytime I can help Collector, just let me know. I used to be a Cobol programmer for the phone company back in my mis-spent youth  . User feedback was always important.

You seem to have a knack for finding different versions than I have ;)
