This could be funny or serious...
For example, I learned to improve my typing because of Sierra games.
I also learned that throwing rocks at something in a tree to knock it out is not easy (QFG1).

Reading, typing, and spelling. Spelling most of all.

I learned to type fast and accurately.
I also learned there's death waiting around every corner.

Re: What did you learn from Sierra games?
I actually learned how to type quickly from Infocom games, but Sierra games helped. I do specifically recall learning how to spell "Colonel" from playing The Colonel's Bequest.
I also learned how to bend down gracefully in a skirt or dress from Rosella in KQ4.

Typing, and a lot of English. That disco is considered un-hip. What a tan line is. What a peg leg is. What a pick up line is. What a dildo is. What a masochist is. What a prank call is (but I still don't get the Prince Albert in the can). What a kumquat is. What topiary is. And that's just LSL7!
Through Gabriel Knight I learnt a lot about voodoo, vampires, several SIDNEY articles, impressionist art, Wagner, Templars, French, German, Latin, and that Hitchcock is really cool. Though a lot of that knowledge is achieved from research outside playing.

Re: What did you learn from Sierra games?
Prince Albert is a brand of pipe tobacco. Because tobacco is usually sold in a can (or at least it used to be a long time ago), kids used to make prank calls based on the name and packaging.BBP wrote:What a prank call is (but I still don't get the Prince Albert in the can).
Other similar prank calls have occurred. I know that when my Dad was a kid, he and his best friend used to pull a ton of prank calls on a store called "Arthur's" in New York. Most of the jokes involved references to Arthurian legends. According to my Dad, the store clerks used to get pretty damn pissed off.
Some of the best prank calls I've ever heard stem from the use of Sound Boards. A sound board is a recording of different lines of speech from famous individuals, usually actors and fictional characters. People then use these recorded lines to prank call people.
One of the most popular and widely used sound boards are of Arnold Schwarzenegger from various movies.
My brother and I once used a sound board to prank call our Mom. That was awesome.

Okay thank you! I also had problems with the "blew a seal" joke, but I get that now.

Through GK, I wrote a biography of Ludwig II. And it helped to get me started on history, and opera, and art, and languages, and etymology, and philology, and numismatics, and...BBP wrote:Through Gabriel Knight I learnt a lot about voodoo, vampires, several SIDNEY articles, impressionist art, Wagner, Templars, French, German, Latin, and that Hitchcock is really cool. I think the first Sierra game I ever played was QfG1 - although LSL1 was a close second. It helped with spelling, and improved my typing and reading. But then I was always a voracious reader.

Vocabulary, spelling, history, awareness, organization, and especially patience.
