Re: New King's Quest from TellTale!
I am, admittedly, curious to see how this goes. I won't rush out to buy it. I got burned with LSL:MCL, getting too hyped up and hopeful. I will let others buy the game, and I will await their reviews before I decide to purchase it for myself.
I hope they do it as a complete package; and not in episodes. Otherwise, even if everyone says it's the most awesome thing since KQ6, I am going to wait until the whole game is out - and I can just get it all it one piece.
As stated previously by others; this is a fine chance to put "King's Quest" back on the map, if it's all done correctly (or at least in a brand new way that still feels like King's Quest, and not a brand new game, that has no feelings of King's Quest - but has the King's Quest name slapped on it; for example, how most would view MOE. Though it's tied to King's Quest, Daventry, etc - most feel that it was a different game with King's Quest elements and places, and the King's Quest logo, without it actually being a "real" King's Quest game).
I am honestly hoping for the best here. I would love to see if they could do this right; and thus open the door to potentially dipping into other Sierra franchise games, like Space Quest and such.

I don't think that anyone wants it to bomb, but there is nothing wrong with expressing reservations about TaleTale doing it. I was never that much of a fan of Sam&Max and I was not completely sold on the Monkey Island treatment, but that was a better fit that a similar treatment of KQ. I truly hope that it turns out well, but if it turns out to be a variation of Sam&Max AND episodic, forget it. I won't be getting it until I've heard some reactions from people I trust. I'm afraid that if they botch it so badly that it is a flop, it will be blamed on the market instead of bad KQ development and kill any possible future for KQ.

It WILL be episodic. That much is confirmed. But there will also be multiple titles (or seasons). At least, that's what the license states.

Re: New King's Quest from TellTale!
Okay, I know I said I was leaving the thread, but I gotta come back to say something.
I think the problem is that some people here are automatically assuming TellTale's approach will be as disastrous as the creation of games like MCL, BOB and KQ8. While that's understandable, it's also short sighted and leaves out a crucial part of the equation: TellTale Games is an Adventure game developer.
By the time Sierra worked on KQ8, it was no longer Sierra as we all knew it. Even though Roberta was headed in the direction of adding more action to games, I highly doubt she ever wanted the action to overshadow the actual story. Roberta lost control over KQ8 and those in control were either very inexperienced when it came to Adventures or just didn't give a damn.
MCL wasn't even created as a "real" Adventure game as it mostly consisted of button mashing mini-games. Unfortunately, what's now included as "Adventure" covers a wide variety of games. MCL's developer was High Voltage Software, which while a good company in their own right, has never been particularly associated with the Adventure genre. Naturally, Vivendi published MCL and as we all know, it had no real interest in Adventures.
BOB was developed by a company called Team17 Software Limited. They're known for games like the Alien Breed and Worms series. Good games, but not Adventure. Even worse, the publisher was a company named Funsta. How many games had it developed? One and that single game was, in fact, BOB itself.
My point here is that comparing TellTale to what created the above three games isn't really a valid argument. TellTale is known for Adventure games. True, their style has been different, probably due to their close association with LucasArts; however, just because they've done sillier games that doesn't mean they can't do more serious titles.
LucasArts itself had a wide variety of Adventure Games. Games like The Secret of Monkey Island or Sam & Max Freelance Police are nothing like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis or The Dig.
A complaint seen here (and other places) is that there's no fear of death in LucasArts games. This isn't true. While most games wouldn't let you die, in SOME of them death was very possible. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is a good example. In that game, there were various situations Indy faced that could result in death. While dying wasn't as common (and ludicrous) as in most Sierra games, it did exist.
And finally... let's be honest here: KQ1 had little-to-no story whatsoever. That means there's virtually NO WAY that TellTale can screw up KQ1 when it comes to the overall plot.
(Oddly enough, that might actually make TellTale's job more difficult. If a story was already set, all they'd have to do is place it into a new engine and interface. A game like GK1 would actually be easier. The story and all of the dialogue is already there. All TellTale would need to do is create a new engine and clean up the extremely cumbersome interface.)

I don't argue that about KQ1 or KQ2, really.DeadPoolX wrote: And finally... let's be honest here: KQ1 had little-to-no story whatsoever. That means there's virtually NO WAY that TellTale can screw up KQ1 when it comes to the overall plot.
But is it confirmed they're doing KQ1? Or just another KQ game?

They talked about a reboot. Not about a remake. I don't think they'll simply remake KQ1 with newer graphics. I think they intend to move the series forward. At least I hope.

Re: New King's Quest from TellTale!
A reboot of KQ1 is very possible and probably a good thing, too. KQ1 was about as basic as any Adventure could possibly be. I'm not holding that against KQ1 since it was released in 1984, but as far as I'm concerned a reboot would be great.AndreaDraco wrote:They talked about a reboot. Not about a remake. I wouldn't want a reboot of games that have an in-depth storyline with well developed characters, like GK1. I'd definitely go for a remake with better graphics and a more streamlined interface.
The interface is the main reason why I can't replay GK1. Back in 1993 that interface was cumbersome, but still tolerable; in 2011, however, it's just about unusable after having played other games with far better interfaces.
I realize that's not GK1's fault -- I can't realistically hold a game from 1993 to today's standards. However, the interface still ticks me off. It's a shame, too, because I remember GK1 being a very good game.

It's a wonderful game, DPX
Do you know what would be awesome? If Telltale brought Jane Jensen in and develop GK4!

Re: New King's Quest from TellTale!
The only TTG game I've played through at this point is Tales of Monkey Island and I really, really enjoyed it. I didn't think the puzzles were too easy in that particular game. The only thing I would have complained about was the fact that you couldn't die at all. I wouldn't mind the occasional death where it seems warranted (like when cannonballs are whizzing by your head). Although normally I'm not huge into cartoony graphics, they suited that particular game.
I'm cautiously optimistic about them doing King's Quest, depending on their approach. From this and the other IPs that TellTale is involved in making games for, I think they're trying to branch out. So I'm hoping they can make a great modern adventure that still maintains the original charm and general mood of the King's Quest games. It would certainly warrant a different graphical style, but I don't think they're afraid to do that. I will wait and see what comes of this and hope they do it justice.
What's took up my mind more than King's Quest when I was on their site was this. I was both dizzy with excitement and incredibly concerned, when I saw that.
Fables is based on Fairy Tales, but the stories are very adult. I really hope TTG can do it justice. I doubt they would be pursuing that particular series if they weren't planning to stay true to it, because there would be little point. It's darkness is half the appeal. I love the series, so I really hope they do it right. A game in the Fables universe could be a totally amazing game. *cautiously jumps up and down*

Re: New King's Quest from TellTale!
Has anyone noticed the the KQ forum over at TellTale has more threads than the other three new games that were also announced combined? This should really show them how important this franchise is to people.
Re: New King's Quest from TellTale!
Intresting. I have noticed more threads about this popping up all over the internet than I did when they announced Monkey Island. If they are smart enough to realize that and not remake it into another LA style game. However, I have to remind myself to never overestimate the corporate mind.galbyman wrote:Has anyone noticed the the KQ forum over at TellTale has more threads than the other three new games that were also announced combined? I am not sure how you can say that! Remember, Microsoft thinks we're the Corporation of Sierra's Official Help Pages!Collector wrote:I have to remind myself to never overestimate the corporate mind.

I don't like episodic games either. I always wait until the game is completed. You could always end up with an uncompleted series if the first episodes don't sell well, or in the case of Half-Life 2, you could wait years for the next episode with 4 hours of gameplay.
Still, I guess it's better than nothing. I hope this leads to proper remakes for Sierra games on par with the Monkey Island special editions. I think King's Quest V and VI would look amazing in that style.

I'd prefer something new that moves the series forward than a carbon-copy remake like in the case of MI, though.Maxor127 wrote:Still, I guess it's better than nothing.
