5.25" USB Drive

How cool is that?!?!?? I was searching long time for 5.25" USB drive to be able to read some of my Sierra Disks, to no avail. There doesn't seem to be something like that.

Ordered it, bought a cheap 5.25" internal disk drive on Ebay for 25 US$, installed it. What can I say: It worked flawlessly!!! Just ripped disk-images of the 4 5,25" Disks of the 16-Color Version of the LSL1 Remake to my Notebook HDD, extracted all the files to a directory, started ScummVM, Running!!!

I ordered the premium version of Kryoflux, so it came with all the necessary cabling. The 5,25", as you can see, was naked. That's it.

Apparently this magic box does also work with Amiga Floppy drives, Atari Floppy drives, 3,5" PC Disk Drives etc. etc. I am deeply impressed

I have wanted to do something like this for a while, but most solutions are more expensive than I pay for something that I would only occasionally use. The site does not say how much the board itself is. How much just for the board?

@Collector: Seemed they had a glitch in their shop, now you can see the three versions again. Cheapest one is the basic edition. No cables and No (Floppy) Power Supply priced 75 UKP. 80 UKP includes Cabling, 90 UKP includes Cabling and Power Supply.

@Tawmis: When buying a 3.5" USB Drive make sure to check the Datasheet of that specific model first. There are many drives out there, which are only able to read HD, but not DD anymore. I actually bought one myself But replaced it recently

I need something like that, too. My 3.5" hasn't worked for years and I can't even remember the last time I used a 5.25". All those floppies on my shelves waiting to be used. Sigh...

Just dumped fifteen (!) 5.25" disks with a capacity of 360K each to my Harddrive. Kings Quest 5 in its 16-color glory, Version 0.000.056. WORKS! So much fun! Unbelievable, that all 15 disks did held its content for ~ 23 years well preserved...

Pretty sure if I had a computer with 3.5/5.25 drives I could get all of mine installed as well. I have kept my games VERY well preserved. So I'd hope that they're still all functioning.

Of the few corrupt disks I have I was able to recover most with Roadkil's. The main thing that I would like to be able to do is get the data off of the Tandy disks I have.

Do the Tandy disks not work? I would wager you'd just need low density drives, right?

While Tandy could also use PC disks, it looks like a lot of Tandy disks used some propitiatory format. Imaging software that I have tried seems to recognize them as having the Tandy format, but fails to read the data.

Weird. I may be misremembering - but I thought from my PC (I originally had the Tandy 1000SX back in the day!) - that it also worked on a regular "IBM" - but required Low Density Drives to work, as the Tandy 1000 SX I had did not support high density drives. So it took a specific kind of 3.5/5.25 drive.

But I am old. And my memory is not what it used to be. That's for sure.

If I could get the software for USD$50 or less, I would. But 75GBP, that's a fortune!
