SHP #1 Poll: Best Sierra Adventure Released in 1988

Post by AndreaDraco »

Since Collector enabled the polls, I thought of starting a string of Sierra-related polls and everyone is welcomed to start their own, and it would be nice to keep the numeric progression :)

I'd like to begin with five adventures released in 1988, five really great games as far as I'm concerned. So, I'm asking you: what's the best out of them?

Punk!

I had to go with Gold Rush, because of the three routes you could take...

But King's Quest IV was my favorite KQ game (yes, above KQVI - a sin, I know!) And LSL2 was my favorite of the LSL series. And Manhunter NY was the first (and only one more made after it) of that - which was a unique twist. And PQ2 was a huge improvement over PQ1 (in so many ways), but PQ3 was my favorite of the series. But the KQ4 and LSL2 were tough, tough, tough choices to by pass. Only the three different routes creating real re-playability made GOLD RUSH the choice for me.

I missed and voted for King's Quest 4 by accident. I meant to vote Gold Rush. :P

Sorry, Rosella. I like your game; I really do. Yours has nice music, a whale, and some zombies. But in Gold Rush, I can grow a beard. You see my dilemma.

As much of a milestone that KQ4 was (first SCI game and all) I, too went with Gold rush!, mostly because of the alternate paths in the game. I find a multi threaded game a highly valuable feature in an adventure game, perhaps the most desirable after a good narrative. If a game is too linear it starts becoming too passive. Too linear of an adventure make you feel that you are just along for the ride and becomes interactive by means of puzzles only. I would just as soon play a pure puzzle game.

And Tawm, I think that even Al would have to forgive you on this one.

While I agree that the non-linear path in Gold Rush! was nice, I just didn't care for the game itself. It wasn't bad, but something just didn't "click" for me.

I voted for Police Quest II: The Vengeance. Anyone who knows me also knows that I have a soft spot for the PQ series, especially the second game. I'm not quite sure why. Whatever the reason, PQ2 is one of my favorite games of all time.

KQ4 of course! Only because it was one of the very first games I've played and it strikes a nostalgic chord.

King's Quest IV. Same reason as Jules. I'll never forget that day in the late 80ies somewhere when my dad (who strongly opposed video games) brought home a (back then, pirated) copy of KQ4. It was my first Sierra game and holds a special place.

Went for LSL2, though I recall playing GoldRush as a kid (and not really liking all the death scenes). I love the barbershop gag. And Momma.

King's Quest 4. It was the first Sierra game I played and I really loved the different elements in it. Plus, I haven't played any of the others (other than a bit of Manhunter).

Manhunter was uniquely different. I believe if they had ever got a chance to finish it and do a Manhunter III, the series would have been much better. I look back at Manhunter, and it feels so... incomplete. :(

Manhunter is a game that could really benefit from modern-day FPS engines.

Think about it: most of the game was from a first-person point-of-view anyway. Now instead of those awful AGI EGA graphics, use something such as the Source or UT3 engines.
