I remember a game where you collect three pieces, jump into and out of pits, eat (or save!) candy, and make a call.
Is it a console game?

Because this sounds like the horrible E.T. Game.

I know this was already solved, but you need to be more specific when giving hints like this because "going to different worlds" can mean visiting planets or other dimensions or timelines. The word "world" can take on numerous meanings based on how its used and what it refers to in that particular instance, so I think we ALL need to be a lot more specific when giving hints.

Yeah, that does sound like E.T. but it'd be nice if some individuals could remember to specify the platform (computer, console, board, card, etc) when first writing about their "poorly described game."

In the case of THE DEATH GATE, that could be pretty difficult. Because he is going through dimensions to visit other worlds.

So it's not PLANETS. So he's not going from Earth to Mars. It'd be like going from EARTH to ZELKON-12.

Or going from FORGOTTEN REALMS to KYRNN (two different D&D worlds, as another example).

So I thought saying "worlds" was the bigger clue rather than saying, "He hops through dimensions" (which is also technically true).

Because the book focuses on EACH world (each volume is about a different world he visits in 1, 2, 3, and 4 - and then 5, 6 and 7 focus on what happens after he gets the seals).

Even WIKI lists them as "worlds" if you were to look there -
The Wikipedias wrote: Earth

Chelestra, the world of water

Arianus, the world of air

Pryan, the world of fire

Abarrach, the world of stone

The Labyrinth
And for more about the game - thoughts on this?

I've forgotten a few times, I know that. Should we just narrow it down to the game always being computer or console? So that way we don't need to specify if it was computer or console? That can be part of the guessing to narrow it down (if it's even needed). So we would not include board games, card games, etc., in the future - because most of what everyone has done has been a computer game or console game.

Yes, let's limit the games to computer and console. That said, we still need to mention if the game is available only on computer or only on console or both.

Even knowing the genre may not help all that much considering people will probably just go down a list of titles (that's what Rath's currently doing), but it'd at least give people something to work with as opposed to guessing from "every game ever made."
Hrm. Just seeing this (from back on page 2 of this thread).

How would you label the genres? Because even they can be kind of obscure as well.

Well, sure, genres CAN be obscure, but any relatively decent description of the genre could at least help steer people in the right direction.

Even a wide genre description such as "action" is better than nothing because it tells everyone else that they don't need to think about RPG games, strategy games, etc.

It is. (I didn't think it was that well-known! Personally, I've heard of it but never seen it. Have you seen it? Now I'm curious). :)

Sorry, DPX! I noticed that no-one else specified the platform, so I didn't think I had to either.

Since your platforms mention "computer, console, board, card etc.", does that mean we can still use board- or card-games?

E.T. is widely known for being one of the worst games ever made for the Atari 2600 or any platform. In truth, the guys at Atari developing the game were given an impossible time frame to create it, so there was really no chance of success.

Well... according to the rules, we're supposed to specify which generic platform (i.e. writing "console" instead of "NES" or "TurboGrafx-16") the game in question was primarily designed to run on.
Rath Darkblade wrote: Wed Nov 03, 2021 2:07 am Since your platforms mention "computer, console, board, card etc.", does that mean we can still use board- or card-games?
Tawmis and I were discussing that in this thread before you posted, and as far as I can tell, we thought it'd be best if we limited games to console and computer games. Those two categories alone provide such a wide assortment of titles that we'll likely never run out.

Besides, modern board games would be more difficult to figure out. Have you ever heard of Mice and Mystics, NEOM, Quartermaster General 1914, V-Commandos, Call to Adventure, The City of Kings, or Dungeon Draft? What about one of the better known modern board games, Ticket to Ride? There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of board games and card games now and most people only know of the older, more commonly-played games like Candyland, Monopoly, LIFE, etc.

Ask DPX the E.T. console game is known simply for how horrible it was.
Ironically, my friend Chuck had E.T. for the Atari 2600, and he and I spent DAYS trying to figure out the game. DAYS.
But yeah - there's videos about how they buried thousands of copies of E.T. that was picked up and buried at a dump site.
And just a few years ago - there was this whole thing to uncover them from the dumpsite.
And then it was in "High Scores" on Netflix, because of how historically bad - and their impossible deadline, which DPX mentioned, being a result of that.

OK - new one -

I remember playing a console game on the Playstation where you could swap between two characters (a jester type male character, and a female wizard) - but only at the beginning of each level. It played similar to - I guess, you could say Mario? You'd go through these funky levels, and jump over enemies, or shoot them or jump on them, in most cases. One of the weirdest levels I remember is all these giant watermellons you jump on.

That sounds like Pandemonium! to me.

Haven't heard of any of those except "Ticket to Ride". (But of course I've heard of Monopoly, the Game of Life, and Clue/Cluedo).

Then again, I haven't heard of "Pandemonium!" or "Death Gate" either. ;) If it's prior to the 90s, I wouldn't have heard of it unless it's a Commodore 64 game. *shrug*

Cool. :)

Okay... I know of a computer game (that's expensive to play) where players travel in outer space, can purchase multiple ships that range from cargo haulers to fighters, can land on planets to explore (and go to cities), and can interact with other players in space and on planets.
