Nice! I always liked the music in Mega Man 2, and that's unusual for me given that I almost always mute music in games. It's not that I dislike music in general (far from it!) it's that music playing is often a huge distraction for me during the game and gets on my nerves.

:lol: We are different in that regard. Typically music helps set the mood. But then, that probably comes from the fact, that I also often use music to help me set the mood mentally when I am writing. (So I might thrown on Lord of the Rings soundtrack if I am writing a fantasy piece, or a sad, melodramtic song, if I am writing a poem or whatever). So music helps fuel my creativity when I dive into something.

But in regards to the Capcom stuff - a large, large, large majority of it is written in Japanese, so I can't even tell what most of it says and the "album" covers are pretty small thumbnails.

This is really cool. I wish more companies would do this. (of course, this may be an attempt to copyright flag music across platforms like YouTube etc and remixes that use samples from chiptune games)

I definitely can't relate to the heresy of disabling music in games at all, though. ;) Even Super 3D Noah's Ark. Gotta be there. Need my atmosphere. :D :P It's too boring and empty without it. I love to be drawn right in and the music always helps that for me.

Yeah. But then you could just say that he's biased AGAINST music while I'm biased towards it. lol

I get what you mean, though. I write game music now so my opinion will be different.

Actually, as a bit of trivia, when Myst was first designed the Rand brothers didn't want there to be any music because they wanted it to be as realistic as possible and not have any distractions whatsoever. However, when they tried music they discovered that it didn't distrac, but helped draw you into the environment. A good soundtrack does just that.

Try to play Doom 2016 without music, for instance. I don't know how you could ever get away with that. Doom's soundtrack is kind of like its own character in the story! It's essential to the experience!

I am one of those people who even likes to watch the intros to shows, because of the music typically gets me into it (like Vikings, Hell on Wheels, most of the Marvel Netflix shows, Seal Team, etc). That music sets up the tone and my mindset for what's ahead.

So... of the Capcom games, which games are the ones you'd want to hear the soundtracks for?

For me, DarkStalkers because of the "vampire-esque" theme to the whole game and unique characters.

Actually, I haven't been the biggest Capcom fan really. I really loved the Street Fighter V soundtrack though. I'd get that if it's not already available.

There have been a few games where the music wasn't distracting for me, but usually these games are somewhat less complex. For instance, in most fighting games there's no vocal dialogue (beyond yells, screams and grunts) or choices, you just do the moves to defeat your opponent. Granted, Mortal Kombat X, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Injustice 2 all have fully voiced dialogue, but that's also during non-interactive cutscenes.

That said... if you take an RPG, where I not only need to make story-important decisions, but I'll also spend a lot of time comparing stats of items and gear while calculating the cost/benefit ratio of them, and music can quickly become an irritant for me.

I also find that music in FPS games disrupts my situational awareness. I need to be able to hear enemies at all angles, if someone is shooting, running, etc. Music blocks that for me.

To be fair, every once in a while a game comes along where the soundtrack is good and somehow doesn't become a distraction in a more complex title, such as in Arkham Knight. Then again, most of the music took place during cutscenes, so it wasn't the typical game music where it's blasting while I'm trying to think.

Some of this could be due to the hearing damage I have. I'm not deaf, but I can't hear near as well as someone else my own age or even people somewhat older. In fact, an audiologist I recently saw suggested hearing aids, but I can't afford them (and really don't want them at 39), so I'll have to deal with my hearing as it is right now. My hearing problems likely stem from issues with my ears as a child where I almost went completely deaf. Fortunately, two rounds of surgically inserting tympanostomy tubes into my ears as a kid prevented that, but damage was done and is permanent.

Ah, I'm sorry to hear about your ear damage at such a young age. That would likely explain the irritation, though. Totally understandable. You're off the hook. :P (lol I'm joking)

Sorry to hear about the hearing issues, DPX. I clearly (under) appreciate my hearing, because as I said above - I use it for helping me set my mental mode when I am writing (even reading).

I think the one RPG I have often found myself turning off the music is Mass Effect: Andromeda. I have never hated a planet as much as I hate Havarl. Bad enough the game is bland and the NPCs are not interesting, but this planet (and how dark it is, and the big "thing" in the center you need to constantly run around or climb) gets me so irritated that I can't stand the music.
