Best Adventure Game Sidekick! (Round 1)

Post by Datadog »

Now begins the new tournament! This one's dedicated to the Adventure Game Sidekicks - the characters who stick by the hero/heroine through thick and thin, place themselves in mortal peril, and follow the journey all the way to the end (or as far as they can get anyway.) They don't have the luxury of riding around in pockets, or hiding out in dank castles waiting to bust the hero out of a jail cell. They're out there on the field - solving puzzles, crackin' wise, kicking ass, and getting captured/maimed/killed for our amusement!

Click here for the new roster!

I didn't randomize the fights as much this time, so that more similar competitors go could head-to-head in round one. The battles are also uneven, but I'll figure out how to fix that later on.

The first battles are:

1. Cedric the Owl (KQ5) vs. Crow (Longest Journey + Dreamfall)

2. Lockjaw (Pepper's Adventures in Time) vs. Delphineus (Ecoquest)

3. Boogle (Torin's Passage) vs. Flux Wildly (Toonstruck)

4. Horny the Frog (Willy Beamish) vs. Glottis (Grim Fandango)

5. Hoagie vs. Laverne (Day of the Tentacle)

6. Cliffy vs. Droole (SQ5)

7. Srini Lalkaka Bagdnish (Freddy Pharkas) vs. Passionate Patti (LSL3+5)

8. Grace Nakimura (Gabriel Knight) vs. Nicole Collard (Broken Sword)

9. Joey the Robot (Beneath a Steel Sky) vs. Oscar (Syberia)

You know what to do.

Can I just predict right now that Boogle is going to win this? :D

Hmm. This should be interesting.

1. Cedric the Owl (KQ5) vs. Crow (Longest Journey + Dreamfall)
Crow. Even though Cedric did save Graham's life, Crow was a lot more helpful over the source of his games.

2. Lockjaw (Pepper's Adventures in Time) vs. Delphineus (Ecoquest)
Lockjaw. I have a very hard time imagining him losing this fight. (Incidentally, this match brought back memories of that kids' movie, Zeus and Roxanne.)

3. Boogle (Torin's Passage) vs. Flux Wildly (Toonstruck)
Hmm...I like them both, but I think I'll stick with Boogle. I mean, come on, he can change into a SHOVEL! (Wow, I never realized until now how similar their colors were.)

4. Horny the Frog (Willy Beamish) vs. Glottis (Grim Fandango)
Doesn't exactly seem like a fair match to me and I'm not the biggest fan of GF, but I'll still go with Glottis, since I'm sure he'll win this round regardless of how I vote.

5. Hoagie vs. Laverne (Day of the Tentacle)
Laverne. She's the one who starts out the game with a scalpel in her inventory, after all. (Hmm...should a playable character actually count as a sidekick?)

6. Cliffy vs. Droole (SQ5)
Cliffy. Even though there were a couple of instances in the game where Roger had to get him out of trouble, his personality more than made up for those incidents.

7. Srini Lalkaka Bagdnish (Freddy Pharkas) vs. Passionate Patti (LSL3+5)
Srini, for his wise advice and invaluable target practice lessons.

8. Grace Nakimura (Gabriel Knight) vs. Nicole Collard (Broken Sword)
Nico. It's got to be the accent and the interesting hairstyle.

9. Joey the Robot (Beneath a Steel Sky) vs. Oscar (Syberia)
Joey. His body gets destroyed three times, yet he manages to survive, he can identify objects in Robert's inventory that Robert can't identify, his dialogue is great and at one point in the game he imitates a Dalek. If he doesn't win this round, I'll be very surprised.

1. Crow. I never played either of the games he's in, but I have played KQ5, and Cedric was more of an irritation than a help.

2. n/a - haven't played either.

3. n/a - haven't played either.

4. I've played both, and Glottis is my favourite by far here. How can you not love a demon from hell who fixes cars, drinks "Lumbaaaaaaago Lemonaaaaaaaaade!" and throws his heart away.

5. Tough one. Both of these are (to use Hoagie's phrase) "bitchin'". ;) I'll pick Laverne, but only because she looks goofier. ;)

6. n/a - haven't played either.

7. Passionate Patti. I hardly remember Srini.

8. Another tough one - both very good characters. I think Grace wins - mostly because she doesn't need to be forced by Gabriel to do what needs doing (as Nicole sometimes has to be 'persuaded' by George to do something). ;)

9. n/a - haven't played either.

1. Crow - mind you, I'm amongst the Cedric's supporters, but Crow is probably my favorite character from The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, and it was so splendidly voiced (contrary to Cedric) that my vote goes with him.

2. Delphineus - even if I prefer Pepper's Adventures in Time as a game, Delphineus was an amusing companion, one that I really cared about.

3. Boogle - even if I knew the second one, my vote would still be for the awesome Boogle!

4. Horny the Frog - I don't like either of them, but Horny is Sierra's (more or less), so my vote goes with it.

5. Laverne - I dislike them both, but if I'm forced to choose, I'd go with Laverne.

6. Cliffy vs. Droole - I've yet to play through SQ5 and I've met these two characters only superficially, so I'm not voting.

7. Passionate Patti - this is the most difficult battle for me, because Srini is one of my favorite supporting characters ever, but I go with Patti for her historical importance.

8. Grace Nakimura - ahem... I believe no explanation is required

9. Oscar - my favorite Syberia character!
Talk to coffee? Even Gabriel isn't that addicted!

I think sidekicks can be playable characters, as long as they're helping out the main character somehow.

1. Cedric the Owl - Because Crow was never kind enough to point out the obvious bears in my path.
2. Lockjaw - Because he's the reason certain marine animals are endangered.
3. Boogle (Torin's Passage) - Because Flux reminded me too much of Monkeybone from time to time. It's better to hear Torin translate Boogle than to hear it right from the character's mouth.
4. Glottis (Grim Fandango) - Because Glottis easily overshadows everything any sidekick has ever accomplished in the ending cinematic for disc 2.
5. Laverne (Day of the Tentacle) - Because I could never wait to get around to playing Laverne's part of the story. She's so delightfully psychotic!
6. Cliffy (SQ5) - Because he may get in more trouble than Droole, but at least he makes up for it with his tech savvy.
7. Srini - Because in hindsight, I think Patti probably qualifies more as a love interest than a sidekick. Sidekicks shouldn't count if they're being laid. Right, Rudy? ;)
8. Grace Nakimura (Gabriel Knight) - Because Nicole can't play off George's wit and sarcasm the same way Grace plays off Gabriel's.
9. Joey the Robot (Beneath the Steel Sky) - Because what Akril said. Whenever Joey breaks down, you can just take his brain out and put it into something bigger and better.

1. Cedric because even though I've played TLJ, Crow must not have stood out enough because I hardly remember him.

2. Delphineus of course!

3. Boogle because I've never played Toonstruck

4. Horny because I've never played Grim Fandango

5. Neither. Haven't played Day of the Tentacle

6. Cliffy

7. Srini of course!

8. Grace , duh.

9. Oscar because I haven't played Beneath a Steel Sky

I know. It has been for a while, but I never got around to playing it. Too many distractions. :P
