It goes without saying that having Wynne is pivotal. As I told you, I also specialized in Spirit Healer, mainly to have the +2 Magic bonus it grants. Anyway, to keep Zevran and Alistair alive Wynne did her usual Healing Chain (Heal, Rejuvenate, Group Heal) while I helped her with my Group Heal (the only Spirit Healer spell I took). Beside of these healing matters, whenever I had the mane I sent Alistair far away and switched Zevran to ranged weapons while I casted Storm of the Century (Spell Might + Blizzard + Storm). This usually keeps the Dragon still for a good twenty seconds, and in these twenty seconds I proceeded with my usual Damage Chain (Fireball, Flame Blast, Lightning, Frost, Cone of Cold) and since Cone of Cold always freezes the Dragon, I had Zevran backstab it while freezed (with Lacerate) and Wynne casting Rockfist at it. As soon as the Dragon frees itself from the Cone of Cold, I casted Crushing Prison on it (Spirit Damage) and then restarted the Damage Chain. It took me a grand total of 18 lyrium potions to get through the fight. Oh, and it was Zevran to strike the final blow - I was so proud

I beat it around level 16. Below the tactic I used:

Re: Dragon Age: Origins.
I'm going through it a bit slower than you guys, apparently. Between playing TF2 some nights and a recent business trip, I haven't had as much opportunity to play up until last weekend. So now I've finished the Mage's Tower, part of Redcliffe, and the Brecilian Forest. Now I've having some problems in Denerim because I'm a rogue, so I may have to backtrack a little and return when Morrigan has better AoE spells.
I finally met Zevran as well, but I told him to take a hike. I thought that it would leave more to discover the second time around if I didn't have all the characters in my group this time. Plus, it didn't seem likely that my human noble would be too keen on an assassin that had wanted to kill her in the group. I'd imagine nobles are more paranoid about assassins than some. Hopefully that won't cause any problems for me later.
I'm may do that with other potential party members that I meet from now on as well. I already feel like some of the interactions between the characters are phony, since I've spent pretty much no time adventuring with them (Leliana and Sten).
Given your comments on Sten being hard to get approval with, Tawmis, I thought you might like to know that I somehow managed to get +19 approval after a conversation with him. I was floored. He seemed so disapproving while we were talking. I think he has weird logic, since I totally wasn't expecting that. After my dog and Allistair, he likes me the most now.

Wow! How did you do that? I can't seem to talk him more than five minutes, and his responses are always 'Yes' or 'No.' I really don't like him

Re: Dragon Age: Origins.
I got Morrigan to kiss me before we even reached Lothering. She seems highly attracted to mages (or at least my mage). The best part is the interaction and dialogue between Alistair and Morrigan. They're hilarious.
Hmmm... actually, quick mage question: do your party members react negatively to you if you become a Blood Mage? I don't plan on becoming one, but I'd like to know anyway.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins.
I finished all the Treaty Quests. Below some thoughts with spoilers where necessary.
Broken Circle: the first quest I did and possibly one of my favorites. The religious and political backdrops were interesting and most of the side quests were really challenging from a moral perspective, like the Desire Demon one. Plus, the segment in the Fade was awesome and cleverly planned. Being a mage makes this quest even more interesting because I got to see the Circle Tower before the devastation and after, and because every character responded accordingly, recognizing me and often bringing up issues that originally arose during the origin story.
Arl of Redcliffe: I did this quest second and I enjoyed it immensely. Redcliffe was a wonderful setting, the characters were interesting and the side quests very well implemented with the main plot. The epic escalation was the perfect icing on the cake and, in fact
The night segment, when you have to battle through hordes of skeletons and undeads, is perhaps my favorite moment: the atmosphere was thick and eerie and the music was just perfect during the fights. Moreover, I loved that the final outcome was heavily influenced by the choices you made during the day, giving to this quest an incredibly realistic feeling
Urn of the Sacred Ashes: since this quest completes the Arl of Redcliffe one, I completed it right away. I liked it, even if
unfortunately the Haven village - although graphically amazing - was a bit empty: most of the characters don't present many dialogue options and thus the quest felt to me a bit vague. Perhaps this is only because I liked the heresy idea so much that I'd have wanted to explore further and to fully understand the historical roots of the dragon cult. However, when the party reaches the Gauntlet this quests rises to a whole other level of quality and it becomes really great, epic and emotional. Even if I'm roleplaying a character that believes more in the old gods of the Elves than in the Maker, reaching Andraste's final resting place was touching
Nature of the Beasts: another favorite of mine (come to think of it, I loved every Treaty Quest
), and it was great to play through it with a non-Dalish elf. I don't about other characters, but with my Elf Mage I found the whole setting to be extremely rewarding: you have to slowly build the trust (especially with Sarel the Storyteller) and many characters have questions about the cities, the outside world and the social condition of city elves. It was a really rich experience and, personally speaking, I found that Bioware succeeded in writing an Elven mythology that is both coherent with the tradition and peculiar enough to keep the attention high (the Codex entry one can find in the Dalish Camp are amongst the better written of the entire game and the stories they tell are compelling and often fascinating). The main plot (Zathrian and Witherfang) was great as well, and very thought-provoking.
It took me a while to figure out what to do. Side with Zathrian whose hatred and revenge I could totally relate to? Or side with Witherfang, whose rational arguments indeed showed that Zathrian's loss had been repaid tenfold? Can you punish someone for the crimes of their ancestors? Of course no, but aren't the contemporary elves paying a much bigger price for the violence of said human ancestors?
Paragon of Her Kind: the last one. I finished it today. While I certainly liked it and found that the Dwarven culture was as strikingly written and imagined as the Elven one, this is without a doubt my least favorite quests. Broken Circle, Arl of Redcliffe - Urn of Sacred Ashes and Nature of the Beasts offered a solid background, a spellbinding story, many epic moments and rewarding side-quests, and they all felt right. Paragon of Her Kind, on the other hand, felt too long.
While the segments in Orzammar were really beautiful, full of little details to discover, and while the political issue concerning the throne was really good - and amazingly written as always -, the Deep Roads were way too long. I can live with Aeducan Thaig (short and nice), Ortan Thaig (many side-quests and lots of background details) and, of course, the Dead Trenches (the more I neared the Broodmother, the more I grew uneasy, even if I didn't know what lied ahead and this can only mens that the writers/developers are really, really great: kudos for the atmosphere!), but Caridin's Cross was way too long to be just a mid-step and too difficult, with many different passageways and galleries to explore. But even the thaigs I liked - like the Trenches - could have been more brief...
... In general I agree with Datadog: ten hours (I actually finished it in nine, but still) are a bit too much for a single quest line and, even with the most intriguing setting, I eventually grew tired of exploring gallery after gallery, with literally dozens of side-quests thrown at me from everywhere
Right now, I can't wait to be back under the clear night sky and I have no doubt in saying that - during my future playthroughs - Orzammar will certainly be the place I will visit less eagerly.

If Wynne is with you when the Desire Demon teaches you the specialization, she will confront you and fight you, or leave you for good - depending on her disposition toward you. I believe that also Leliana and Alistair loose some disposition (more Alistair I think), but I'm not sure about it.DeadPoolX wrote:Hmmm... actually, quick mage question: do your party members react negatively to you if you become a Blood Mage? Re: Dragon Age: Origins.
I could've done it in nine, but I think I spent a whole hour running around searching for clues as to which king I should support. I eventually went against Bhelen because his assistant was having me spread forged documents around, and yet according to the end credits, I supported the wrong candidate because the dwarves were still living crappy lives. Was there even a third option? Could I run for king?AndreaDraco wrote:... Not a particular quest, but a particular combat encounter. I'm just going to go back and do a couple things differently and go light on the actions that triggered it until I'm a bit stronger. There's plenty for me to do right now. In fact, I'm not sure it's even a necessary combat, so I may not have to do it at all.AndreaDraco wrote:With which quest?Maiandra wrote:Now I've having some problems in Denerim because I'm a rogue, so I may have to backtrack a little and return when Morrigan has better AoE spells.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins.
So...
I have the Dragon Age: Origins Collectors Edition for X360. And it comes with a quest or two extra. I did the first because it gives me extra storage space, sort of. Just have to go to the castle all the time for it. The other, the Stone Golem, I didn't do - thinking it'd be just a side quest.
Well...
Turns out - gives you another party member - a stone golem named Shale!
And with that new addition...
I managed to beat the High Dragon in five minutes. Part of that was because of Shale; part of that I think was dumb luck. The dragon seemed to get himself stuck near the gong after he took down my main character and took down Shale. But Morrigan and Wynne were at the top of the path. The dragon has the PULL command, he'd done it once - but that was it - after that he would just do the wind command with his wings and knock us down - but that did no damage. So in 5 minutes time, the dragon was soon dead and I was on my way to get some dragon armor!
With that done...
I went ahead and decided to go after Flemeth again. Once again, with Shale - this time who I controlled - put in the fire crystals to make him like 40% immune to fire, and put in the electrical crystal for damage - and it took a bit (like 8 minutes) because Shale swings AMAZINGLY slow - but this time it was Wynne and Shale who were left standing, leaving Zeveran and my character whining about their headaches!
Now has anyone encountered...
Gaxkang? He's my new current bane. I only went a few tries against him - and I may be able to pull it off - but he's not easy! At least for me. I see a VERY easy way to beat him if you're a mage (and have yourself, Morigann, Wynne and another tank in the party).
That's all for now.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins.
An all spoilery post.
Shale is great. Her dialogues are incredibly fun and her personal quest very rewarding, both from a material and an emotional perspective. However, I seldom use her in the party, because I really find that character + Zevran + Alistair + Wynne suits my playing style incredibly well
Gaxkang the Unbound was a very tough battle. I had Alistair tank him and rally the companions (I gave him the Champion specialization), while Zevran continuously backstabbed it. Wynne was in a corner casting healing spells over and over again and I cycled through Crushing Prison, Cone of Cold, Mana Clash, Mana Drain and, when we needed time to rest and replenish health + mana, Force Field, which blocks Gaxkang for nearly thirty seconds.
Now, I'm currently...
... visiting the Alienage in Denerim and I'm gathering consensus for the Landsmeet. I plan to crown Alistair alone, since I can't stand Anora, and to do this Arl Eamon was very clear: I will need all the support I can muster from the nobles, so I'm doing a lot of side-quests to convince many arls and banns that Loghain is an evil scumbag and a traitor.
On a side note...
... Considering that I played the Human Noble Origin, even if I'm now playing an Elf Mage, when I met Arl Rendon Howe, I was extremely pleased to end his pathetic excuse for a life! Take that, you treacherous dog!

Re: Dragon Age: Origins.
I just finished the Landsmeet.
I crowned Alistair, who I'll know will be a wonderful king, and decided that the unsufferable Anora should be put in jail, since she refused to swear fealty to Alistair.
Now it's time to finish some lateral quests and then...
Archdemon! Here we come!
