If Windows goes Subscription-base, I'll either go to Linux or try to find another open-source operating system. I don't like paying anyone more than I have to. I doubt I'm the only one.
It's like drugs.
People become so reliant on them (whether prescription or addiction).

Most applications are made for Windows (games especially).

They're probably pretty confident that the general population will just subscribe to Windows when (if) that day comes.

I'd switch to Ubuntu if more games were compatible. Unfortunately, ditching Windows would probably render at least 50% of my gaming library unusable. That said, I might eventually go for a dual-boot system.

There is also WINE, which I think would take care of most of your older library. Not sure what working percentage there is for the newest games that use the latest DirectX. You could look through their compatibility database. https://appdb.winehq.org/

It depends on what you mean by "older library." I'd want to make sure that anything from at least 2010 onward would be compatible. I'm sure older games that need DOSBox or ScummVM would work just fine or at least as well as they do in any Windows OS environment.

Well, I would not be talking about WINE for anything that already runs in DOSBox or ScummVM. I think that WINE does use DOSBox for anything old enough to require DOS underpinnings, but that is not what we were talking about. WINE allows Linux users to run many Widows programs and games by providing a compatibility layer by translating Windows system calls (including DirectX) into POSIX-compliant system calls to run on Linux. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software)

Hell, as far as the old stuff goes, Qbix uses WINE to run my Win32 SHP installers and then just switches out the Win DOSBox for a native build.

Is it possible to run Windows 98 games under Win7 or Win10? *curious* For instance, Discworld Noir? ;)

If they've been edited somehow to work with modern operating systems. There are a lot of older games on GOG that were from the Win 95 and 98/98SE era, and those work. I don't think any (or at least most) games would work straight out of the box, though.

Sure, of course. I wouldn't expect a Win 95/98 game to work straight out of the box. I know Win95/98 use the FAT file system and Win7/10 uses NTFS or later, among other things.

I'm only asking about that one particularly because it's a good game, and I've been trying to make it work (on and off) for a long, long time, including trying some work-arounds.

Try this?

I am not sure if you know of the "fixed version of the file for Windows XP"...

Yep, I know about that work-around (and have the file they're referring to). I tried that a few months ago ... I can't remember the exact error message, obviously, but I do remember that the game did not run.
